My birthday’s this Sunday and I’d asked for a few days off. Truth is, my mental health’s been all over the place lately. I haven’t slept well, my anxiety’s through the roof, and I’ve cried pretty much every single day for the past month.
I wasn’t even excited about my birthday. I was dreading it. A lot of my so called friends have ghosted me, so I figured no one would care. Today’s my last day at work before my little break and I walked into my office expecting the usual, instead, it’s covered in streamers, balloons, and fresh roses. Someone baked homemade brownies and another coworker grabbed my go-to Starbucks latte.
I’ve only been here 2 months, hardly enough time to feel “part of the team.” These past few weeks have been so rough, and this surprise hit me like a warm hug. I’m sitting at my desk right now, tears streaming down my face. What’s the sweetest and most unexpected work surprise you’ve ever gotten?

While preparing for a conference, checking and rechecking documents, booking flights and hotel for guest facilitator and putting together meal plans, I didn’t pay attention to everyone disappearing. Then one of the executive assistants came to tell me I was to report to the conference room. All I could think was “who did I upset this time?” I knocked before entering somewhat panicked I had missed a deadline when they started singing ‘Happy Birthday’. I asked whose birthday it was and they showed me the cake. It wasn’t until that moment I realized I had forgotten my own birthday. The people I worked with didn’t forget.🥲 Even the director of DHS managed to walk right by my desk without alerting me. I hate surprises and often don’t mention my birthday until days later so I don’t have to deal with being in the ‘m center of attention. That was many years ago but it is still my favorite birthday memory of all time.
