... Read moreLiving as a 59-year-old Black woman in today's society, I have come to realize how important it is to stay authentically myself despite the external pressures and misrepresentations. Society often has preconceived notions about people like me—sometimes amplifying or overselling certain aspects that do not define who I really am. In my experience, many attempt to place labels on me or create stories that don't reflect my true character, particularly around body image and lifestyle. I identify as a regular, down-to-earth woman who has always embraced being a tomboy. I never sought to fit into the mold of senior citizen beauty contests or petty social rivalries. Instead, my life revolves around my faith, ministry, business, and family—these are the pillars that keep me grounded. The overselling of my “chunky BBW” body or turning it into some spectacle does nothing but distract from the values I hold dear. Additionally, dealing with fatphobia and shaming is a daily reality for many, including myself. It's important to recognize that bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and none of these differences warrant harassment or ridicule. Mental health awareness is vital in tackling these prejudices and encouraging empathy rather than judgement. I firmly believe that having self-respect and embracing who you truly are is the key to peace and happiness. If I could offer advice based on my journey, it would be to reject the temptation to conform just to satisfy others' expectations or social media-driven trends. Own your story, your body, and your life choices proudly. Surround yourself with positive influences who respect and uplift you rather than those who seek to diminish your worth. In the end, it's about living your truth, caring less about the noise, and focusing on what matters most to you.
