... Read moreOkay, so you guys know how much I love hitting up the Goodwill Bins, right? But seriously, I've never seen a day like the one I just had. It was literally a sea of stuffed animals! It got me thinking about why these 'stuffies' are such a hot commodity at the bins and how to really get the most out of a hunt for them. First off, if you're like me and you love a good stuffed animal, the bins are truly a paradise. You can find everything from brand-new-looking characters to super vintage treasures. That day, I spotted what looked like a “Giant Meekey Mense” (which I'm pretty sure was a huge Mickey Mouse!) and even a “First Teddy 2002” – imagine the memories attached to that! It's not just about the famous characters, though. I once found a beautifully intricate “Crochet Bumble Bee” that someone clearly put a lot of love into, and unique little friends like a “Doodle Bean” are always a delightful surprise. So, how do you maximize your chances of finding these gems? Here are a few tips from my own bin adventures: Timing is Key: Fresh carts are your best friend! Try to go when they're actively rolling out new bins. That's when you have the first pick of everything, including those hidden stuffed animal treasures. Weekdays often mean fewer crowds too. Dig Deep (Literally): Stuffed animals often get buried under other textiles. Don't be afraid to put on some gloves and really rummage through the bins. You might uncover a rare find or a beloved character that someone else missed. Inspect for Quality: While the price is right, always check for stains, tears, missing eyes, or any strong odors. A quick sniff test can save you from bringing home something you'll regret. I usually look for items that seem relatively clean or that I know I can easily wash. Consider Your Purpose: Are you collecting? Upcycling? Buying for a child? This helps narrow your focus. For collectors, vintage tags or unique handcrafted items (like those slightly freaky but cool handmade dolls I mentioned in my post!) are gold. For kids, look for well-loved but intact mainstream characters. You might even find a classic “Treety Bird!” or something similar that brings back childhood memories. Cleaning is a Must! Once you bring your new friends home, give them a good clean. Most fabric stuffed animals can go into a pillowcase and then straight into the washing machine on a delicate cycle with cold water. Air drying is best to maintain their shape and fluffiness. For more delicate or vintage items, a gentle spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap works wonders. The thrill of finding a beloved character, a rare collectible, or even just a cuddly friend that needs a new home, is what keeps me coming back to the bins. It's an eco-friendly way to shop, and you're giving these items a second life. Plus, the stories you come home with are always worth it! Like finding a giant pink Stitch—even if I couldn't remember her name, the sheer size and bright color made my day. It's these unexpected discoveries that make thrifting for stuffed animals so incredibly rewarding. Happy hunting, fellow bin adventurers!

My little cousin would love that pink Stitch (Angel). The doodle bear reminds me of my childhood.
