On April 2, 1984, Coach John Thompson made history by leading Georgetown University to an NCAA basketball championship, becoming the first Black head coach to win the title. Over his 27-year career, he built a powerhouse program with 20 NCAA tournament appearances, seven Big East titles, and an outstanding 596-239 record. In 1988, he continued to break barriers as the first Black head coach of the U.S. Olympic basketball team.
