My name is Althea Gibson.
I grew up in a world that didn’t expect a Black girl to belong on the biggest courts on Earth… but I didn’t ask for permission. I worked. I trained. I endured. And I kept showing up.
In 1957, I made history. I became the first Black player to win Wimbledon — and that wasn’t just a trophy… that was proof. Proof that talent doesn’t have a color, and greatness doesn’t need approval.
And then, on September 8, 1957, I won the U.S. National Championships — what people now call the US Open — becoming the first Black athlete to win that title, too.
But I wasn’t done.
Over my career, I earned 11 Grand Slam titles — 5 singles, 5 doubles, and 1 mixed doubles. That’s not luck. That’s legacy built with discipline.
And because the world couldn’t ignore what was happening, I was named Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1957 and 1958. Back-to-back.
Then I broke another barrier — I stepped into golf and became the first Black woman to compete on the LPGA Tour. I didn’t just want to win games… I wanted to expand what was possible.
