Snowy Days

Oh, the magic of a family snow day! There’s truly nothing like waking up to a blanket of fresh white snow and knowing a day of pure joy and adventure awaits with your kids. While watching their ‘Snow Adventures’ unfold (as I mentioned before, it’s my favorite show!), I’ve also learned a few things over the years about how to make these days extra special and memorable for everyone. First things first, getting dressed for the cold is key to maximizing outdoor playtime. Layers are your best friend! Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a warm fleece or wool mid-layer, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Don't forget waterproof gloves or mittens, hats that cover ears, and warm, waterproof boots. Trust me, cold, wet kids are not happy kids, and a little preparation goes a long way in extending those precious outdoor giggles. Once everyone is bundled up, the real fun begins! Our go-to activity is always building a snowman. We love to get creative – sometimes it’s a classic three-tiered snowman, other times it’s a snow fort, or even a whole family of snow creatures. Don't forget to raid the house for props! Carrots for noses, buttons for eyes, old scarves, and hats really bring them to life. If you have a good hill nearby, sledding is an absolute blast. Just make sure to pick a safe spot away from traffic and obstacles, and always supervise. A friendly snowball fight (with soft snow, of course!) is another must-do that always ends in laughter. And don't underestimate the simple joy of making snow angels – it’s a classic for a reason! After all that exhilarating outdoor play, coming inside to warm up is just as much a part of the snow day experience. We have a tradition of hot chocolate with all the fixings: whipped cream, mini marshmallows, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. It’s the perfect way to thaw out tiny fingers and noses. Then, it's time for cozy indoor activities. We love pulling out board games, building epic blanket forts, or settling down for a family movie marathon. Sometimes, the quiet moments of reading books together by the window, watching the snow fall, are just as cherished as the active play. Beyond the activities, there are a few practical tips I’ve picked up. Always have towels ready by the door for wet gear, and a designated spot for drying everything out. Staying hydrated is important even in cold weather, so make sure to offer water alongside the hot chocolate. And most importantly, remember to capture those memories! Snap photos and videos, but also take a moment to just be present. These 'Snow Adventures' with your kids grow up so fast, and these family snow days are truly treasures.
