The Law of Moses was a Shadow of Things to Come

The transition from the smoke and thunder ☁️⚡ of Mount Sinai to the "still small voice" 🤫 of personal conviction is a journey that never gets old. 📖✨

I spent my morning in Exodus 20–24 📜, and it’s easy to get lost in the sheer volume of the Law—the Ten Commandments, the ordinances, and the blood of the covenant. 🩸⛰️

On the surface, it feels like a strict list of "thou shalt nots." 🚫⚖️

But when you read it through a broader lens 🔍, you start to see the beauty in the scaffolding. 🏗️✨ These laws weren't just about ancient societal order; they were a "shadow of things to come." 👣🌅

Reflecting on the Law of Moses reveals its profound role as more than just a set of strict rules. As someone who has studied Exodus 20-24 closely, I've come to appreciate how these laws functioned as teaching tools designed to guide hearts toward a greater spiritual reality. The ordinances, sacrifices, and commandments were symbolic, pointing forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the new covenant He established. In particular, the ritual of covenant-making described in Exodus 24—with the sprinkling of blood and communal meal—serves as a tangible expression of the divine promise and relationship between God and His people. This imagery helps believers today understand that though the exact performative elements of the Law have passed, their deeper purpose remains: to awaken remembrance of God and our duties toward Him. What struck me most is how the blood sacrifices foreshadowed the perfect sacrifice of Christ, and how Moses, as mediator, found fulfillment in Jesus as our Advocate before the Father. This perspective transformed what initially seemed like mere 'thou shalt nots' into a beautiful scaffolding that points to redemption and grace. For anyone contemplating the Law today, it’s important to examine whether our religious practices are focused only on external adherence or if we recognize them as echoes of a richer spiritual truth. This insight has enriched my own faith journey by uncovering the heart behind the rules, reminding us that these ancient laws were ultimately designed to lead us to a personal relationship with Christ.
