bad advice saturday: insights won’t do the work.

keep collecting insights.

eventually they'll do the work for you.

they won't.

insight is not transformation.

it's the preview.

you can understand a pattern completely

and still live inside it.

you can know exactly why you do

what you do

and do it again tomorrow.

knowing isn't the hard part.

acting on what you know

while it's still uncomfortable

is the hard part.

insight feels like progress

because it activates the same part of the brain

as actually changing.

but insight without action

is just a more sophisticated way

of staying the same.

the work doesn't do itself.

it was never going to.

save this if it hit. follow for more.

... Read moreFrom my personal experience, I’ve come to realize that gaining insight into my habits or behaviors is only the first step in a much longer journey of change. For a long time, I collected introspective thoughts and patterns—in the hope that understanding them would somehow shift my actions. But just like the article describes, awareness isn’t enough to change the status quo. In fact, insight can sometimes feel like progress because our brain rewards us for recognizing problems even if we don’t solve them. It creates an illusion of growth that can make us complacent. I vividly remember many times when I pinpointed exactly why I reacted a certain way or fell into unhealthy cycles. Yet, the next day, without deliberate effort, I repeated the same behaviors because transformation requires action—especially action that feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar. The real challenge is stepping into the discomfort and committing to new habits that align with these insights. For instance, I found journaling my actions helped me track the gap between understanding and doing. It forced me to reflect not just on what I knew, but how I was applying it, holding myself accountable incrementally. What truly helped me break free from repetitive patterns was focusing on embodiment—the practice of aligning body, mind, and emotions through conscious actions. Insights are just previews or roadmaps; the real journey unfolds through repeated, intentional steps that may feel awkward or difficult at first. So, while insights are valuable, they must be paired with commitment and consistent action to create lasting change. This aligns strongly with the idea that “the work doesn’t do itself.” Understanding your own architecture of self is crucial, but building new neural pathways and lived experiences demands showing up and working through discomfort daily. This valuable perspective encourages a more realistic and compassionate approach to self-improvement and highlights why stopping at insight alone is bad advice.

bad advice saturday: stay busy.
stay busy. you won't have to feel it. you will. busyness doesn't dissolve the feeling. it postpones it. it keeps the grief, the anger, the confusion, the grief you haven't named yet — all of it — at a manageable distance. until the schedule clears. until the noise stops.
