first day errands!
Throwback to first week of school!! ✨✏️ #teachervlog #teachersoflemon8 #teacher #teachertips #teacherlife
Oh my goodness, when I posted about my first day errands, I wasn't kidding about the whirlwind! Every year, as the back-to-school season kicks off, there's always that moment where you look at your to-do list and feel like you're just a bunch of 'stacked kids in a trench coat,' trying to pull off being a fully functional, calm adult! It’s that hilarious yet stressful feeling of trying to manage a million things – from lesson plans to bulletin boards – all while keeping a serene, collected demeanor for your students. It's a universal teacher experience, trust me. My 'jitter juice prep' is usually one of the first things on that list, and it's a definite lifesaver for those first day of school jitters, for both me and the kids! For those of you new to the concept, 'jitter juice' is simply a fun, calming drink you can make for your students. It helps ease those initial anxieties and makes the start of the day feel special. My go-to recipe involves sparkling water, a splash of fruit juice (like cranberry, apple, or even a berry blend), and some fun additions like gummy worms, colorful sprinkles, or a slice of citrus. It’s definitely not 'witches brew' by any means, just a little magic to calm nerves and spark joy. I always prep the ingredients – juices chilled, gummies portioned – the night before so it’s just quick assembly on the big morning. Sometimes I even call it 'calm-down concoction' or 'bravery brew' depending on the class! Beyond the classroom, my personal sanity during the first week heavily relies on quick, easy meals. Nobody has time for elaborate cooking after a full day of teaching! I’m always on the lookout for simple dinner ideas that come together in a flash. Things like sheet pan dinners (chicken and veggies tossed with olive oil and spices!), big batches of pasta with a ready-made sauce that can last a few days, or yes, even those quick 'SLIDERS' I mentioned in my post, are perfect. Having these ready-to-go options means I don't succumb to the exhaustion, avoiding that 'no witches brew' scenario in my kitchen after hours! My rule of thumb is: if it takes more than 30 minutes active cooking time, it’s not for the first week. Meal prepping on Sunday, even if it's just chopping veggies or pre-cooking some protein, saves me so much stress and keeps me fueled. And let's not forget the actual first day of school itself! Beyond the errands, it's about setting a positive and engaging tone. I try to plan interactive icebreakers that get kids talking, clearly communicate classroom expectations in a fun way, and always have a quiet, independent activity ready for students who might still be feeling shy or overwhelmed. Classroom organization is key too – labeling everything, having clear routines, and making sure all supplies are accessible. It’s all part of trying to keep those 'stacked kids' (aka my frantic inner self trying to do literally everything) from tumbling out of the trench coat and revealing the chaos within! Remember, it's okay to not have everything absolutely perfect. The most important thing is creating a welcoming, understanding, and engaging environment where everyone feels safe. Taking a few moments for yourself, even just a five-minute breathing exercise, can make all the difference. We're all in this together, trying our best to make the magic happen even when we feel like we're barely holding it all together!
