One thing I’ve found extremely helpful is incorporating daily regulation and social skills practice into the classroom routine. For example, a Daily Morning Meeting can be a game changer to set the tone for the day. It only takes about 15 minutes and includes a greeting, a mini-lesson, a fun question or game, and a calm down or break moment to help students regulate their emotions. Additionally, dedicating time on Fridays for “Mini Lessons” focusing on specific emotions helps students build a vocabulary around feelings and learn coping strategies over time. I’ve used resources like the "A Little Spot of Emotions" book set, which is fantastic for these lessons. The key is consistency and patience because, just like academic skills such as subtraction, emotional regulation needs daily practice to develop.
