Find your CurlsBot Curl Type
The day is here to announce the new Curl Type quiz. I previously had a hair type quiz based on the Walker system (you know 2b, 3c etc.) but just like the Walker system it was too complicated (like potentially 20 questions or more). This quiz is only a couple of questions! That said, I coded this by hand in homegrown typescript by myself so if it has bugs please let me know.
I also have a blog post about why I designed this system. Basically my site has a lot of hair tools and I needed a system that actually could translate into actionable differences. I also studied the history of the Walker system and many other hair typing systems like LOIS and those used in scientific literature. If you’re curious I also wrote a 1000+ word blog post with 10+ citations about how the system was designed. That’s in my link in bio.
I know I post a ton on social but in reality my website is most of my audience, with 80k ish sessions a month. I was worried about dedicating time to it bc of the threat of AI search summaries (most traffic is from Google) and just people not wanting to read blogs anymore but I’m happy to say I was still able to grow the audience this year. All this helps support me as an indie software dev. I really do not want to work in tech again bc of all the AI stuff and I also feel that after very publicly helping start a union in a software company, a lot of places do not want to hire me. So if you follow me here please consider visiting my website. It’s one of the few indie hair websites still out there ❤️ #curltype #hairtypes #swavyhair #curlyhair #coilyhair
Understanding your curl type is key to choosing the right hair care routine that truly enhances your natural texture. The new CurlsBot Curl Typing System simplifies this process by categorizing curls into four main types: High Shrinkage, Tightly Coiled Coily, Tight Curls, High Elongation Loose Curls, and Swavy Wavy. This approach makes it easier to identify your hair type without overwhelming quizzes or complex classifications like the Walker system. High Shrinkage curls are characterized by their ability to contract significantly when dry, requiring moisturizing products that maintain hydration and minimize shrinkage. Tightly Coiled and Coily hair types often need gentle handling and rich conditioners to prevent breakage and encourage healthy growth. Tight Curls typically benefit from light oils and curl creams that enhance definition without weighing hair down. Swavy Wavy hair lies between straight and curly, presenting loose, flowing waves that require lightweight products to maintain volume and prevent frizz. By knowing your curl type precisely through the CurlsBot quiz, you can select products and styling techniques tailored to your hair’s unique needs. This system is backed by extensive research into existing hair typing models and offers actionable insights rather than just labels. If you’re curious about the science and history behind the classifications, the site features a detailed blog post with over 10 citations explaining the design of this intuitive system. Taking care of curly hair is often about more than products—it’s about understanding your hair’s structure and behavior. With an estimated 80,000 monthly sessions, CurlsBot has grown into a trusted resource for curl enthusiasts seeking an indie approach to hair care that’s practical and supportive. Visit the quiz link to explore your curl type and unlock personalized tips to keep your curls healthy, vibrant, and beautifully defined.
