Why I don’t use AI imagery

Creating authentic and detailed imagery of curly or wavy hair is a unique challenge that many artists face. From personal experience, I’ve found that AI-generated images tend to smooth out the richness and variety of curl patterns, often producing generic or average representations. AI models typically learn from vast datasets and blend features, which can result in images lacking the individuality and texture one expects in curly hair depictions. Using vector graphic software like Affinity Designer allows me to precisely control every strand and curl, giving life and personality to each illustration. This hands-on approach ensures that the varied shapes, shadows, and flow of hair are true to real-life appearances. Moreover, supporting artists—whether self-employed or within the community—fosters creativity and preserves art forms that AI cannot yet replicate authentically. While AI tools can assist in some creative processes, they often miss cultural or textural subtleties crucial for representing diverse hair types. When I look at AI imagery of curly hair, I usually notice common patterns repeated across various images, lacking the dynamic movement and volume seen in natural curls. Additionally, hand-crafted artwork offers flexibility and emotional expression, letting artists embed personal storytelling into each image, something AI cannot fully grasp. For those passionate about representing hair diversity accurately, embracing manual techniques or collaborating with skilled artists remains the most rewarding approach. Overall, while AI imagery will continue evolving, for now, I prefer the authenticity and uniqueness that hand-drawn art provides, especially when it comes to celebrating the beauty of curly and wavy hair.
