Sketch Time

Ever find yourself with a few minutes and an itch to create something? That's when I love setting aside some dedicated SKETCH TIME! Sketching everyday objects is one of my favorite ways to practice and just relax. It’s amazing how much you can learn about observation and form by simply drawing what’s around you. When I started sketching, I used to think I needed grand landscapes or complex figures. But honestly, the best subjects are often right in front of you. Think about a simple coffee mug, a houseplant, a pair of glasses, or even the keys on your desk. These everyday 'objects' are perfect for honing your skills. What makes an object great for sketching? I look for interesting shapes, varying textures, or how light hits it. Sometimes, it’s just something I have a connection to, like a souvenir from a trip – those tell a story! Here are a few tips that have really helped me during my SKETCH TIME sessions: Start with Basic Shapes: Don't try to draw the whole object at once. Break it down into simple geometric forms – a cylinder for a cup, a cube for a box, a sphere for an apple. This makes the whole process less intimidating. Observe Light and Shadow: This is a game-changer! Notice where the light source is coming from and how it creates highlights and shadows. Adding even basic shading can make your object sketch pop and appear three-dimensional. Focus on Outlines First: Get the general shape and proportions right before diving into details. You can always refine lines later. Don't Fear Mistakes: Seriously, sketching is all about practice. My sketchbook is full of 'failed' attempts, but each one taught me something. Embrace the process! Regular, Short Sessions: You don't need hours. Even 15-20 minutes of focused SKETCH TIME a day can make a huge difference in your improvement. That's why I often grab my iPad and Procreate for a quick doodle, just like I did for those nomadic wanderers. For tools, you really don't need much. A pencil and paper are perfect for traditional sketching. But if you're like me and love digital art, an iPad with Procreate (that's what I used for the nomadic piece!) or another drawing app offers incredible flexibility. You can experiment with different brushes, colors, and layers without wasting paper. Finding inspiration is everywhere! Just take a moment to really see the things around you. Maybe it's the texture of your favorite blanket, the way a book leans on a shelf, or the intricate details of a flower. Sometimes, I challenge myself with an 'art prompt' like the one I mentioned. It pushes me out of my comfort zone and leads to unexpected creations. So, if you're looking to boost your drawing skills or just unwind, I highly recommend dedicating some regular SKETCH TIME to objects.
