I've been seeing gorgeous dried orange garlands and pomanders everywhere lately, and I just had to try making them myself! What started as a simple idea for decorating my tree for winter instead of just Christmas, quickly became a new favorite craft. It turns out, creating these beautiful, fragrant decorations is totally doable, even for a beginner like me. My first tip, just like in the original post, is to use a really sharp knife for slicing your oranges. This makes a huge difference in getting thin, even slices that will dry beautifully. After slicing, I always make sure to gently press out any excess juice. This step is crucial because it reduces drying time significantly and helps prevent the slices from looking dull or uneven. I actually put them between a couple of paper towels and press lightly before they go into the oven. Speaking of the oven, drying these slices is surprisingly straightforward. I lay them out on parchment paper on a baking rack (so the air can circulate) and bake them at a low temperature, around 200 degrees Fahrenheit, on the bottom shelf of my oven. The original post mentioned 3-4 hours, and that's generally what I find too, but it really depends on the thickness of your slices and your oven. I usually flip them every hour or so. You'll know they're done when they feel dry and firm, almost leathery, and have that beautiful translucent look. Don't rush it; patience is key here! Once your beautiful orange slices are perfectly dried, the real fun begins: creating a classic orange pomander or stringing them into stunning garlands. For a traditional orange pomander, I love to stud cloves directly into whole oranges. It creates an incredible, spicy aroma that fills the whole room. You can tie a ribbon around it and hang it or simply place it in a bowl. For garlands, it’s now off to string! I use a needle and some sturdy twine or fishing line to thread through the dried slices. You can alternate them with cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, or wooden beads for extra charm. These garlands aren't just for the tree; I drape them over my mantel, across windows, or even use smaller pieces to adorn gift wrap. They bring such a warm, natural, and cozy aesthetic to any space, making your home feel truly ready for the winter season.
