Oh my gosh, I totally get the scrap yarn struggle! It starts with just a few small balls, and before you know it, you have a whole bin overflowing with beautiful bits and bobs that are too pretty to throw away but seem too small for anything substantial. My recent handmade bag project, crafted from a giant ball of all my colorful chunky scrap yarn, was such a game-changer for tackling this stash, but it also got me thinking about all the other amazing things you can whip up with those leftover treasures. Chunky scrap yarn is especially perfect for this, as it makes them sturdy and quick to finish. Granny Squares (or other small motifs): These are the ultimate scrap busters! Each square only needs a small amount of yarn, and you can join them later to make blankets, scarves, bags, or even clothing. It’s like a patchwork quilt for your yarn. Pom-Poms & Tassels: Add a pop of color to existing projects, keychains, gift wrapping, or even make a fun garland. They use surprisingly little yarn and are super satisfying to create. Small Amigurumi or Appliqués: If you love making tiny creatures, scrap yarn is your best friend. A small amount of yarn can bring a cute little critter to life. Keep all your worsted weight together, your fingering weight, etc. You can also separate by fiber type if you’re particular about washing instructions. Color-Code or Group: Sometimes I like to group similar colors together, even if they’re different weights, when I’m planning a multi-color project like my handmade bag. It helps visualize the palette. The "Scrap Ball" Method: Just like I did for my bag, winding all your random scraps into one giant ball is incredibly satisfying. It’s a surprise every time you start a new color! Just make sure to secure the ends well when joining. Small Project Bins: Keep a dedicated bin or jar for really small scraps that are perfect for embellishments or tiny projects. This stops them from getting lost in the bigger stash. Join as You Go: Learn a few good ways to join yarn, like the magic knot or Russian join, so you can seamlessly transition between different colors or smaller pieces without lots of ends to weave in.
