Any pro tips?

I’m fuming. American Airlines totally wrecked my Rimowa suitcase on my flight from Chicago to LA. When I grabbed it at baggage claim, I was stunned. The whole thing was mangled. That suitcase cost over $1,000, and now it’s completely unusable.

I filed a claim right away asking for a replacement or refund. They had me ship the broken Rimowa to their repair center and warned the process would take 3+ months. I made endless calls and emails, total radio silence half the time. And my suitcase was past its 5-year warranty and the frame was so damaged, it couldn’t be fixed.

They said they’d only pay its current value but I can’t find the original receipt from years ago. Now AA’s refusing to compensate me at all. I feel so ripped off, they broke my expensive luggage, and now I’m out $1k with nothing to show for it. Has anyone dealt with this before? How did you fight an airline that refused to compensate you for damaged luggage?

#Letschat #Asklemon8 #AmericanAirlines

2025/11/27 Edited to

... Read moreIt's absolutely infuriating when an airline destroys your prized luggage, especially a high-value item like a Rimowa. I've been there, staring at what used to be a beautiful suitcase, now a 'severely damaged red suitcase' with a 'large hole' or 'torn material,' feeling completely helpless. When an airline wrecks your belongings and then tries to dodge responsibility, it feels like a personal attack on your investment. My personal experience has taught me a few things about navigating this frustrating process. First, document everything immediately. If you can, take detailed photos and videos of the damage right at the baggage carousel. Don't leave the airport without filing a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with the airline. Make sure the report details every bit of damage – whether it’s a crushed frame, a ripped handle, or a completely mangled 'wheel' – and get a copy for your records. This immediate documentation is crucial, as the airline might later claim the damage occurred after you left their care. Next, understand the airline's liability vs. your luggage warranty. While your Rimowa might have a great warranty, that's for manufacturing defects or normal wear and tear. When an airline causes damage, it falls under their liability. However, they often try to limit this. Many airlines have a maximum liability amount for damaged luggage, which might be less than the actual value of your expensive suitcase. This is where the battle for fair compensation begins. One of the biggest hurdles I faced was proving the value of my luggage without the original receipt. It’s easy to misplace a receipt for an item purchased years ago. If you're in a similar boat, don't despair. Look for alternative proofs of purchase: credit card statements showing the transaction, bank statements, or even appraisal documents if you had the luggage insured. Photos of your Rimowa from before the trip, showing its condition and brand, can also help establish its approximate age and model. If all else fails, research secondhand values for identical models online; this can give you a baseline for its 'current value,' which airlines often try to pay. When the airline initially refuses compensation or offers a ridiculously low amount, don't give up. My strategy involved escalating the issue. I started with polite but firm written communication, reiterating the damage and my expectation for fair compensation. If that didn't work, I filed a complaint with the Department of Transportation (DOT) in the US (or equivalent consumer protection agencies in other countries). These official complaints often get a quicker and more serious response from airlines. Social media can also be a powerful tool; a well-documented public post about your 'destroyed Rimowa' can sometimes pressure an airline into action. Just remember to keep your tone factual and professional. Finally, moving forward, consider protecting your investment. For expensive luggage, travel insurance that specifically covers lost or damaged baggage can be a lifesaver. Some premium credit cards also offer this benefit. Additionally, using a protective cover for your Rimowa can prevent superficial scratches and dings, though a severe impact leading to a 'large hole' or a broken 'wheel' might still happen. Always inspect your luggage's critical components like the 'wheels' and handles before a trip, especially for older bags, to ensure they're in good condition to withstand the rigors of air travel. It's a tough fight, but with persistence and the right information, you can stand up for your rights when an airline damages your belongings.

She spent $1k because she could and she wanted to. People travel with luggage and personal items that are worth more than that all the time. The least they could do is compensate for the current value.
