After our wonderful family road trip to Yreka, California, I realized there's even more to uncover in this charming Northern California town than meets the eye! Always check local trail conditions before heading out, especially if you're visiting in cooler months. Fishing is another popular pastime here. While we just dipped our toes in, I heard from locals that the Klamath River and various smaller lakes around Yreka are fantastic for trout and salmon. If you're serious about fishing, consider hiring a local guide who knows all the prime spots and can share insider tips. Don't forget to grab your California fishing license beforehand! Yreka also boasts a rich history as a Gold Rush town. We stumbled upon the Siskiyou County Museum, which was surprisingly engaging for both adults and kids. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the area's past, complete with old mining equipment and pioneer stories. It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours, especially if the weather isn't ideal for outdoor activities. The historic downtown area itself is worth a stroll, with some beautiful old buildings that tell their own stories. When it comes to food, Yreka has some delightful local spots. Beyond the amazing coffee we found, there are several family-friendly diners and cafes. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast at a local spot that served up classic American fare – perfect fuel for our hiking adventures! Don't expect big-city gourmet, but do expect warm, friendly service and delicious comfort food. And that quick drive to Oregon? Definitely take advantage of it! We took a short trip to Ashland, Oregon, which is just about an hour north. Ashland is famous for its Shakespeare Festival, but even if you're not seeing a show, the town itself is lovely to explore with beautiful parks and unique shops. It really adds another dimension to your Northern California trip. My top tip for visiting Yreka, especially with a family, is to embrace its slower pace. It’s not about rushing from one attraction to the next, but rather soaking in the natural beauty and the friendly small-town vibe. Pack layers, as Northern California weather can be unpredictable, and bring a good camera – the scenery, especially with Mount Shasta, is truly postcard-worthy. Whether you're casting a line, hitting the trails, or just enjoying a quiet moment, Yreka offers a refreshing escape.
