Making a difference
Before making our big move out of state one of the hardest things for me to leave was definitely my job. Since November of 2023 I had been working at a psychiatric facility in California and when I first started the job I didn’t think this job would have an impact on me like it did.
As I went around to the different units saying my goodbyes to my patients and coworkers, I had one patient hand me this coloring page. To most people it probably seems like a regular coloring page but to me this definitely means the world.
Working in healthcare we go day after day helping others especially in mental health where we are with people that are going through the worst time of their lives. To be acknowledged that I have made a difference in my patients journey truly brings tears to my eyes. I’m so grateful to have worked in the psychiatric field and help others as well as learn more about myself in the journey.
I can’t wait to pursue my nursing career and continue to help others while being a safe place for them.

The significance of making a difference in the psychiatric field cannot be understated. Mental health professionals play a crucial role in supporting individuals who face various challenges, from depression to anxiety. In a psychiatric facility, the ability to connect with patients often creates a safe haven for those navigating their darkest times. Many healthcare workers find immense joy and fulfillment in these interactions, as they help individuals embark on their healing journeys. Empathy, active listening, and creating a supportive environment are vital components of effective mental health care. By building trust, healthcare providers can encourage patients to open up and engage in their treatment plans. Moreover, incorporating creative therapeutic activities, like art and coloring, can empower patients and facilitate emotional expression, fostering a sense of achievement. As aspiring nurses enter this field, they learn the importance of self-care and reflection on their experiences. The ability to influence lives positively is a privilege that comes with great responsibility. It’s essential for healthcare professionals to remain vigilant and seek ongoing education and support, ensuring they can provide the best care possible. The journey in healthcare, whether in mental health or nursing, is not just about treating illnesses; it’s about making lasting connections and being a beacon of hope for those in need.
