Luke 21:34
“Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,”
Luke 21:34 NLT
““Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.”
Luke 21:34 NIV
This section is talking about how we must stay strong when following God so we can be with Him in heaven but as I was reading the word “dulled” caught my attention. I changed versions and the NIV says “weighed down”. When someone says it “weighs you down” you understand that feeling but it has been used so much we don’t feel the weight of those words anymore. When I read it “dulls” you it really put it in a new perspective for me. You go day by day on auto pilot from all the stress, trying to fit in with the world, focusing on our obsessions, living with the consequences of our actions that we become dull. We let it weigh us down so much we have become “dull”. When I change the words I feel the difference and it put it into a new perspective for me.
Life without God is dull. Life without God is hopeless. Life without God weighs you down. Life with God is joy. Life with God has purpose. Life with God is peace.
Life with God will still be hard and your life will not be perfect but He promises us good things when we are faithful and follow him. He will bless us if we stand strong on the Word of God and stay alert to our actions and feelings. Lean on Him and find Christ like support. You can find joy. You can find peace. You can resist temptation. You can be with our King in heaven.

You know, it’s so easy to get caught up in the daily grind, isn't it? One minute you're planning your week, the next you're feeling completely overwhelmed by everything. That’s exactly why Luke 21:34, and really the whole passage of Luke 21:34-38, has become such a cornerstone for my own spiritual journey. When I first read it, my mind would just gloss over it, but recently, I felt a deep call to truly understand the meaning of Luke 21:34 in my own life. Jesus's warning to 'Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,' feels more relevant than ever. For me, 'carousing and drunkenness' isn't just about literal parties or alcohol – it's about anything that distracts us, anything that promises temporary escape but ultimately leaves us feeling emptier. Think about the endless scrolling on social media, the constant chase for the next exciting thing, or even just getting lost in trivial pursuits. These things, like Sin, Worry, and Your Addictions, can truly weigh you down and dull you. They make us forget our true purpose and connection to something bigger. The passage continues beyond verse 34, urging us to 'be always on the watch, and to pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.' (Luke 21:36 NIV). This isn't just about a future event; it's about living vigilantly *now*. It's about cultivating a heart that is not easily swayed or made heavy by the pressures of the world. This is where the idea of 'by your endurance gain your lives' (Luke 21:19) truly resonates with me. It’s a call to persevere, to stand strong in our faith even when life is hard. So, how do we actually 'watch out' and prevent our hearts from becoming dull? For me, it starts with intentionality. Life with God isn't about avoiding all problems, but about having a NEW PERSPECTIVE when they come. When I feel Worry or stress creeping in, I've learned to pause and lean into prayer. It's about consciously choosing to spend time in His word, finding strength not in my own capabilities, but in His promises. This practice helps me recognize the things that truly dull me and pull me away from His peace. I’ve found immense joy in actively seeking out 'Christ-like support' – friends who encourage my faith, instead of those who might lead me toward things that 'weigh me down.' It’s about building a Life With God where joy and peace aren't just concepts, but lived experiences, even amidst the chaos. It’s about understanding that temptation will always be there, but we have the power to resist it when we stay connected to our source of strength. This commitment to staying alert and connected helps me to resist the pull of what 'dulls' my spirit and instead embrace the vibrant, purposeful life God intends. It’s a daily choice, but one that truly makes all the difference.
