On November 1st, millions of Americans lost access to their SNAP benefits - the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that 42 million people rely on for federal food assistance. I was inspired by my friend Kylie @nutritonbykylie to make these bags for my local food pantry with the ingredients and recipe for my vegetarian chili. I stock my community fridge weekly, but these meal in a bags will hopefully make it easier for someone in my community to cook a full meal!

Everyone deserves to eat and to do so with dignity. Here are some ways you can support your community..

Donate food via community fridges, local food pantries, school programs, mutual aid groups or orgs like @cityharvestnyc or @godslovenyc. Some

ideal products to donate are:

- Shelf stable items like beans, nut butters, soups, and canned proteins.

- Dry goods and grains that folks can build meals around like rice, oats, quinoa, farro, barley.

- Spices, olive oil, shelf-stable non-dairy milks, broths, and spice packets.

(In addition to food, I also like to donate personal items such as feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, soap, toothpaste / toothbrushes). Also, bus fare cards for people traveling to pick up food!

Always open to learning about other ways and resources to support - so please comment below to share!

... Read moreThe recent reduction in SNAP benefits has created significant challenges for many families and individuals who rely on this federal assistance program. As highlighted, creating meal-in-a-bags using nutritious and shelf-stable ingredients like beans, rice, canned proteins, and broths not only provides an easy-to-prepare option for people facing food insecurity but also helps maintain their dignity by enabling them to cook full meals at home. Community fridges and local food pantries play a crucial role in bridging the gap worsened by SNAP reductions. When donating, opting for versatile ingredients such as dark red kidney beans, black beans, vegetarian broths, and whole grains like quinoa and barley can enable recipients to create varied and balanced meals. Additionally, donating spices, olive oil, and shelf-stable non-dairy milks enhances flavor and nutritional value. Beyond food, personal care items such as feminine hygiene products, soap, toothpaste, and bus fare cards can address other essential needs often overlooked. These donations contribute to overall well-being and reduce additional financial pressure. Getting involved with organizations like City Harvest NYC or God’s Love We Deliver supports larger-scale distribution efforts. Moreover, school programs and mutual aid groups help reach a broader community segment. If you are looking to help, consider assembling your own meal bags with ingredient lists and simple recipes, inspired by initiatives like those mentioned in the article. Sharing your experiences and ideas in community platforms can spread awareness and improve collective efforts. Remember, everyone deserves to eat with dignity. Small actions like these have meaningful impacts in supporting neighbors during tough times.
