West Coast park Singapore: what is the story behind these rosters everywhere?

That rooster is a red junglefowl - basically the wild ancestor of domestic chickens. And yeah, they’re all over Singapore parks 😄

*The story behind SG’s wild chickens*

1. *Origins*: Red junglefowl are native to SE Asia, including Singapore. Long before HDBs, they roamed our forests. So they’re not really “stray pets” - they’re local wildlife.

2. *Why so many now*: 2 big reasons. First, urban development pushed them into parks/green corridors. Second, people used to keep chickens + roosters for pets, cockfighting, or backyard farming. When AVS banned keeping poultry in HDBs in the 60s-70s, many got released. They bred with wild junglefowl and now you get these colorful mixed birds everywhere.

3. *NParks’ stance*: NParks doesn’t exactly “let them breed all over SG”. Their official policy is coexistence + management. They remove aggressive roosters, relocate birds from residential areas, and educate people not to feed them. But in nature reserves, parks, park connectors like Pulau Ubin, Kranji, Pasir Ris - they’re left alone because they’re part of the ecosystem. They control insects + seeds.

So our rooster friend is basically a Singaporean local. Loud at 5am, but he’s been here longer than most of us

At West Coast Park , it makes sense! That whole stretch from West Coast to Clementi Woods + Ulu Pandan Park Connector is prime chicken territory.

Lots of greenery, quiet corners, and fewer people bothering them compared to Bishan or East Coast. The roosters there are especially bold - they’ll strut right across the cycling paths like they own the place.

NParks actually does active management there because residents nearby do complain about 4am crowing. But they can’t just remove all of them since red junglefowl are native. So it’s this balance: relocate problem birds from HDB blocks, but leave the park populations be.

I spotted saw him chilling with his family..lol

a classic West Coast Park scene 😂

A whole chicken family picnic. Dad rooster doing security duty, hens scratching around, maybe a few chicks hiding in the grass. They’re super tight-knit like that - the rooster actually protects them and calls them over when he finds food.

That’s why NParks leaves them in parks vs HDB areas. In the forest patches they behave like wild birds: forage, raise chicks, keep to themselves. Problem only starts when people feed them and they get too comfy near void decks.

Did the chicks look tiny and fluffy, or were they already half-grown? The family units there get pretty big by rainy season.

*1. Can you eat them?*

Technically they’re red junglefowl/wild chicken mixes, so they’re not farmed poultry. But NParks + SFA treat them as wildlife/strays. There’s no food safety checks on them, plus they forage in parks/drains. So health-wise it’s risky. Taste-wise people who tried say they’re super tough vs farm chicken.

*2. Penalties if you catch them?*

Yeah, there are fines. Under the Wildlife Act + Animals & Birds Act:

- *Catching/removing wildlife*: Up to $50,000 fine and/or 6 months jail

- *Keeping poultry in HDB*: AVS prohibits it. If caught, fines up to $5,000 + forced removal of birds

- *Culling/killing them*: Counts as animal cruelty under Animals & Birds Act. Can be $15,000 fine and/or 18 months jail

NParks/AVS actively fine people who trap or harm them. They get calls all the time from residents about “rooster removal”, and only their licensed contractors can do it.

Reason: They’re considered part of Singapore’s natural heritage + ecosystem. Even if they’re noisy, the law protects them.

So best to just enjoy the free nature documentary at West Coast Park 😄 You a chicken rice fan though? The farm chicken version is way less paperwork lol

... Read moreVisiting West Coast Park and spotting these vibrant roosters and their families is always a unique experience. From personal observations, these birds have adapted remarkably well to the urban greenery, showcasing behaviors similar to their wild counterparts despite the city surroundings. Their presence contributes significantly to the local ecosystem by naturally controlling insect populations and helping with seed dispersal, which boosts plant diversity in the parks. Many locals might find the early morning crowing annoying, but understanding that these roosters have coexisted with the environment far longer than urban developments can change perception from nuisance to appreciation. Managing coexistence is challenging, especially in areas near residential flats where some birds become territorial or overly bold. Based on encounters at West Coast Park, the roosters tend to patrol quietly when undisturbed but become defensive if their territory or family is threatened. Their tight-knit family groups with protective dads and foraging hens are fascinating to watch, highlighting natural instincts preserved despite urban pressures. It’s also important to respect NParks’ guidelines about not feeding these birds. Feeding them encourages them to gather near human habitats, causing issues that lead to relocation or removal. Maintaining natural food sources ensures they behave more like wild junglefowl, which benefits both the birds and local residents. Through ongoing observations and community discussions, it’s clear these birds are a vital part of Singapore’s natural heritage. They offer a living link to the island’s past forest life and provide educational opportunities on biodiversity and wildlife coexistence within urban environments. So next time you see a rooster strutting confidently across a cycling path in West Coast Park, remember it’s a vibrant symbol of Singapore’s wildlife resilience and heritage.

Thks for the enlighhtenment. Great help to expand my knowedglement of wild life. They round my blk of flats about 2-3 mother hens often accompanied by a cockerel always alert to protect his flock. He sounds the morning alarm around 5am onwards often perched on a tree branch facing the main road....
