Growing sweet Potato slips Indoors

2025/1/11 Edited to

... Read moreHey plant parents! I'm so excited to share my journey of growing sweet potato slips indoors. It all started because I love the idea of having fresh, homegrown produce right from my kitchen, and sweet potatoes are a staple in our house. Plus, it's such a fun and rewarding project! If you’ve ever wondered how to get those beautiful sweet potato vines or even a small harvest from a pot, you're in the right place. Starting sweet potato slips indoors is surprisingly simple. You really only need a healthy sweet potato, some toothpicks, and a glass of water. I pick an organic sweet potato, wash it well, and then stick four toothpicks around its middle, spaced evenly. These toothpicks act as a support system, allowing you to suspend about half of the potato in water. I place it in a clear glass or jar so I can easily see the roots developing. Then, I put it on a windowsill where it gets plenty of indirect sunlight. Make sure to change the water every few days to keep it fresh and prevent mold. You'll soon see tiny root hairs emerge, and then little sprouts – these are your 'slips'! This method of placing sweet potato slips in water to root is super effective and totally mesmerizing to watch. Once your slips are about 4-6 inches long and have a few leaves, they're ready to be detached. Gently twist or cut them off the sweet potato. Each slip needs to develop its own root system. So, I place these individual slips in their own glasses of water, making sure the bottom node (where the roots will form) is submerged. Again, plenty of natural light and regular water changes are key. Within a week or two, you'll see a network of roots forming on each slip. This is truly the most satisfying part of growing sweet potato slips indoors! Now, for the next step: transitioning your rooted slips into soil. While many people prepare these slips for outdoor gardening, you absolutely can grow sweet potato plants indoors in pots! Choose a pot that's at least 10-12 inches deep and wide, as sweet potato plants can get quite large. I use a good quality potting mix that drains well. When planting, make sure to bury the slip deep enough so that the roots are well covered and at least one or two nodes are below the soil surface. If you're planting multiple slips in a larger container, remember sweet potato slips spacing is important; give them about 6-12 inches apart to allow for good air circulation and root development. Caring for your indoor sweet potato plant requires a bit of attention. They love warmth and sunshine, so a south-facing window is ideal. Water them regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. As the plant grows, you'll notice sweet potato vines covering the pot. You can let them trail, or gently guide them around a small trellis if you prefer a more contained look. While growing sweet potatoes inside, don't expect the same massive harvest you'd get from an outdoor garden, but you can definitely get a decent yield. The exciting part is the freshly harvested sweet potatoes! Typically, sweet potatoes take about 3-4 months to mature after planting the slips. You'll know they're ready when the leaves start to yellow and the vines look less vigorous. Carefully dig around the base of the plant to find your tubers. It's like a treasure hunt! I absolutely love pulling up my own freshly harvested sweet potatoes from my indoor garden. They taste so much better when you've grown them yourself. After harvesting, cure them for about a week in a warm, humid spot before storing to enhance their flavor and shelf life. Happy growing!
