Healthy Snacks That I Love (And You Should Try!)

Three years ago, I was nearly 30 pounds obese and struggling with healthy eating a lot. I’m not perfect by any means (in fact, most of my diet is still processed junk foods), but alas, I’ve lost 50 pounds since then and these are some of the snacks that helped me do it!

Instead of buying more Ruffles and Dean’s French Onion Dip (I recommend), I finished the bag I already had (ha) and brought stuff to make rice cakes, salads, etc.

The rice cakes in particular aren’t super nutritional. They’re okay for you and low-calorie (usually 45 cals per cake), but the joy really comes with the fact that they’re so palatable. The rice cake serves as a canvas for any delicious concoction you want! I’ve made pizza rice cakes with tomato sauce and cheese, fruit rice cakes, vegetable rice cakes, just plain cottage cheese rice cakes… there are ideas all over the internet on how to eat them. Just make sure you actually eat something on the rice cake so you get nutritional value. Unless you just like plain rice cakes. That’s cool too. :)

Not all of the food you see here is 100% healthy— see the Nutella on the rice cakes— but paired with other healthy things it can still make a delicious snack!!

Plus, remember that avoiding certain foods to your demise is not good for you! A good diet takes balance. You shouldn’t totally avoid anything unhealthy unless you’re used to that lifestyle and it’ll never bother you going without it.

I hope you like these ideas!! I had fun making these slides!

... Read moreFinding snacks that truly support a weight loss journey can be tough, right? I've been there! After losing 50 pounds, I realized that the key wasn't deprivation, but smart, delicious swaps. And honestly, rice cakes topped with creamy cottage cheese became my absolute secret weapon. They're not just low-calorie; they're incredibly versatile and satisfying, making them the perfect go-to healthy snack. Let's talk about the absolute star: rice cakes with cottage cheese and tomato. This combination is a classic for a reason. Imagine a light, crispy rice cake spread generously with cool, creamy cottage cheese. Then, you layer on vibrant red and orange baby tomatoes, bursting with flavor. It’s fresh, it’s savory, and the protein from the cottage cheese keeps you feeling full for longer. For an extra kick, I sometimes sprinkle a pinch of dried basil or a grind of black pepper. You can also try sliced cherry tomatoes or even finely diced sun-dried tomatoes for a richer, more intense flavor profile. It truly feels gourmet but takes minutes to prepare! But the fun doesn't stop there. My repertoire of cottage cheese rice cake snacks is vast! If you're looking for more savory options, experiment with other fresh veggies. I often top my rice cakes with cottage cheese, thin slices of crisp cucumber, and diced orange bell pepper. The crunch from the vegetables adds such a satisfying texture! A sprinkle of 'Everything Bagel' seasoning or some fresh chives can elevate this simple snack into something truly special. Sometimes, I'll even add a thin slice of lean turkey or smoked salmon for an extra protein boost, making it feel like a mini, balanced meal. And what about a sweet tooth? While the main article touched on fruit rice cakes, pairing cottage cheese with fruit is another fantastic option. Cottage cheese and strawberries, for instance, are a match made in heaven. Spread the cottage cheese, then layer on fresh strawberry slices and maybe a light drizzle of honey or a dash of cinnamon. For those days you need a little indulgence, remember the rice cakes with Nutella, bananas, and strawberries that were pictured – it’s all about balance, right? You can absolutely enjoy treats within a healthy eating plan, especially when paired with nutritious elements. The beauty of rice cakes as a healthy snack foundation is their simplicity. Always opt for plain or lightly salted versions to control your sodium intake. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your toppings – think avocado, a smear of hummus, or even a hard-boiled egg slice. The goal is to make snacking an enjoyable, nutritious part of your day, not a chore. These cottage cheese and rice cake creations have genuinely helped me maintain my weight loss, proving that healthy eating can be both easy and incredibly delicious. Give them a try – you might just find your new favorite healthy snack!
