tips on being a mindful reader 📚
As someone who has been reading about 100 books a year for the past couple of years, I’ve worked really hard to remember the ones I love most. Here are tips to get everything you can out of the books you’re enjoying. All of these tips encourage reflection and mindfulness, which can be hard when you’re enjoying a book and have the urge to just fly through the pages.
📚 Annotation: I love flipping through I book I love and seeing all the lines I underlined. It’s such an easy way to be reminded of what moved me in the story.
📚 Reviews: as a book reviewer I got into this habit naturally, but I’ve found that taking time to reflect on the books I’ve read and writing a formal review on Goodreads helps me retain the plot and the emotions it evoked. Even if you aren’t a book reviewer, it can be a great habit to get into for yourself.
📚 Sharing: When I love a book, the first thing I do is think about who in my life will love it as much as I did. Having a friend read your favorite books gives you the perfect opportunity to discuss the story over dinner, adding sentimental value to your reading experience.

Mindfulness in reading is the practice of fully engaging with the material, allowing you to appreciate the narrative and deepen your understanding. These practices not only enhance comprehension but also make reading a more enjoyable experience. One effective approach is to annotate your texts. By highlighting meaningful quotes or passages, you create a personalized dialogue with the book. This not only aids in memory retention but can also be revisited later for inspiration or reflection. Another productive habit is writing reviews after finishing a book. Crafting reviews, whether for a blog or sites like Goodreads, encourages critical thinking and helps crystallize your thoughts about the story, characters, and emotions experienced. Reviews can serve as a valuable reference in the future, helping you remember what you loved—or didn't—about a particular book. Sharing your reading experiences with friends adds another layer of enjoyment. Discussing plots, themes, and messages prompts deeper engagement and can lead to richer interpretations. Book clubs or casual reading groups also provide a fantastic platform for exploring various perspectives on the same book, enhancing your understanding and appreciation. Ultimately, being a mindful reader transforms reading from a passive activity into a reflective practice that can deepen your emotional connections with the stories you cherish. Embracing these tips can make your reading journey not just enjoyable but also profoundly meaningful.

Love these tips! I like leaving reviews on Fable because there’s a great reading community on there and it’s so interactive and social.
