The prettiest bookstore in Pittsburgh ✨

I spent the end of November on a two week road trip across America and I found so many amazing bookstores along the way. Our last stop was in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, where we stayed at a boutique hotel in the heart of downtown, a little treat for us after such a long journey. In the morning before we headed home to Brooklyn I stopped at the White Whale bookstore, where I finally found a copy of Small Thing Like These by Claire Keegan. Every bookstore on our route was sold out of it after it was on the NYTimes 100 best books of the 21st century list earlier this year. I’m going to save the book for the week of Christmas and I am SO looking forward to it. I also couldn’t resist this cute sweatshirt, I love the color. 😊

... Read moreAs someone who loves discovering unique local spots, I can confidently say that finding White Whale Bookstore in Pittsburgh was an absolute highlight of my recent road trip. Nestled on Liberty Avenue, this independent gem immediately caught my eye with its inviting exterior. The dark blue facade, adorned with crisp white lettering and cheerful yellow star decorations, really stands out. You can't miss the charming sandwich board outside, which isn't just advertising books but also tempting passersby with promises of delicious cafe items and even adult beverages – a perfect setup for a relaxing afternoon! Stepping inside, the atmosphere is just as delightful. It truly feels like a 'highly curated selection in a beautiful space,' as one might describe it. The interior is wonderfully organized, with countless bookshelves filled to the brim with books, from classic literature to the latest releases. I spent a good amount of time browsing the display tables featuring notable fiction, appreciating the thought put into their selection. It’s clear they pride themselves on offering a diverse and interesting array of titles that you might not find everywhere else. One of the pleasant surprises I discovered was what they called a 'rare sale section.' Who doesn't love a good bargain? Tucked away, I found a white rolling cart with books marked at '30% off' and a clear 'SALE' sign, offering a chance to snag some fantastic reads without breaking the bank. It's these little touches that make White Whale Bookstore feel so special and personal. Of course, my main mission was to find a specific book, and I was thrilled to finally locate 'Small Things Like These' by Claire Keegan – a book that had been sold out everywhere else after landing on the NYTimes 100 best books list. Holding that green-covered book with its Booker Prize 2022 sticker felt like a real victory! Beyond the books, I also couldn't resist picking up one of their light blue sweatshirts. It features the distinctive 'WHITE WHALE BOOKSTORE' branding and a cute whale logo, and it is genuinely 'SO SOFT.' It’s the perfect souvenir to remember this lovely literary stop. White Whale Bookstore isn't just a place to buy books; it's an experience. Whether you're looking for a specific title, hoping to uncover a new favorite, or simply want to enjoy a cup of coffee (or something stronger!) in a cozy, bookish environment, this spot has it all. It's an ideal place to spend an hour or two, browsing, reading, and soaking in the unique charm that only an independent bookstore can offer. If you're ever in Pittsburgh, especially downtown, make sure to carve out some time for White Whale – you won't regret it!
