The Docker architecture

When I first started working with Docker, understanding its architecture was a bit overwhelming due to the many layers involved. However, once I broke it down into key components—Docker daemon, Docker CLI, images, containers, and networking—it became much clearer how everything fits together. One crucial part is the Docker daemon (dockerd), which runs on the host machine and manages container lifecycle and image operations via a REST API. I found that this daemon communicates closely with container runtimes like runc, which handle the actual processes running inside containers. Another vital aspect is Docker images, which serve as the blueprint for containers. These images are stored in Docker registries and contain the filesystem and dependencies required. When you run a container, Docker uses storage drivers such as overlay2 or aufs to efficiently manage layered filesystems, saving space and speeding up deployment. Networking is also handled through Docker network drivers like bridge, macvlan, and overlay, which isolate container networks while providing connectivity. From personal experience, understanding namespaces and cgroups in the kernel space helped me comprehend how Docker ensures resource isolation and security for running containers. Lastly, container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes or Docker Swarm build upon this architecture to manage scaling and deployment for complex applications. In my projects, leveraging these orchestration platforms along with understanding Docker’s internals has greatly improved the reliability and efficiency of my cloud-native applications.
