I ran across the following post today, that should seem a basic truth to any Bible reading, Jesus following Christian - but it struck me - in the saddest way, how different basic Bible truths have become to many progressing believers, and even from many pulpits…

“Watching children shepherd sheep in the Holy Land finally made this parable click for me.

Jesus wasn't picking animals at random - He was describing two completely different approaches to life...

Two young kids were leading a flock through the Judean desert, and the sheep stayed close together, following the sound of their shepherds' voices.

The sheep simpy trusted their guides completely.

But earlier that week, I watched goats with their herder… completely different story.

The sheep simpy trusted their guides The goats scattered constantly, climbing rocks, veering off the path, and forcing the herder to chase them down repeatedly.

While sheep follow, goats think they know better - insisting on going their own way.

…the difference was striking:

The sheep took the safe, winding paths shepherds created down mountainsides.

The goats ignored the shepherd's path, running straight downhill into dangerous terrain.

The sheep trusted the path - even when they couldn't see where it led.

The goats trusted themselves.

And that's when Jesus' choice of animals in Matthew 25 finally made sense to me.

…In Jewish thought, goats often symbolized independence and defiance, while sheep symbolized dependence and obedience.

Jesus wasn't just talking about animals.

He was describing two types of people:

Those who trust their

Shepherd, and those who trust themselves.

I've been both.

When I try to be my own guide, I end up scattered, drained, and climbing out of holes I dug myself.

But when I follow Jesus - when I trust the Shepherd more than I trust myself - life gains clarity and direction.

The safest path isn't always the most obvious one - but it's always the right one, knowing your Shepherd knows best.

…Jesus chose sheep and goats because He knew we'd recognize ourselves in their behavior.

(From excerpts of a post by Dave Adamson)

Do we live our lives according to His Word, and seek His will, or do we just do what we think is best and expect Him to just bless it? Do we assume that our thoughts are His thoughts and we don’t need His Word? Or do we train ourselves upon His Word so we will recognize His will?

The narrow way is the only way. Self has to fall off. Our own will has to be put down. He is either everything, or He is nothing to us. Are we all in on the right? Or will we be separated and set to the left?

... Read moreAfter truly grasping the profound distinction between sheep and goats in Matthew 25, especially after hearing about the Holy Land observations, I found myself reflecting deeply on my own spiritual journey. It's one thing to understand the parable intellectually, but another to see how it plays out in our daily lives. The original article perfectly captured that 'aha!' moment – how children herding in Judea brought Jesus's words to life. What resonated with me even more was the detailed picture Jesus paints in Matthew 25:31-46, specifically when he talks about separating sheep from goats. It's not just about general obedience; it's about specific, tangible acts of love and compassion that truly define our alignment with the Shepherd. When I first read about the separation, I used to think it was purely about belief or following a set of rules. But Jesus's words are so concrete: 'For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' This isn't abstract faith; it's faith in action, a faith that manifests through empathy and service. The 'sheep' are those who, out of genuine love for the Shepherd, extend that love to others, especially the 'least of these' in society. Their actions flow naturally from their trust and connection to Him. My own experience has shown me how easy it is to slip into 'goat' behavior, even with the best intentions. There have been countless times when I've been so focused on my own plans, my own comfort, or what *I* thought was best, that I completely missed opportunities to serve, to listen, or to simply be present for someone in need. It's in those moments that I feel scattered, much like the goats veering off path, chasing fleeting desires or distractions. The article beautifully describes how trusting ourselves can lead to digging holes we then have to climb out of – a feeling I know all too well, leaving me drained and unproductive. What I've come to understand is that trusting the Shepherd, truly allowing His Words Are Kisses to guide my path, isn't about rigid adherence or blind following. It's about cultivating a heart that is sensitive to His leading, which often manifests as a call to compassion and selfless service. It means making a conscious choice daily to look beyond my immediate wants and asking, 'How can I reflect the Shepherd's love right now, in this situation?' It's a continuous process of aligning my will with His, knowing that His path, though sometimes challenging or counter-intuitive, always leads to true life, peace, and purpose. This powerful biblical imagery of the shepherd and sheep isn't just an ancient story; it's a living blueprint for navigating the complexities of modern life with grace and profound purpose, constantly reminding us to choose the Shepherd's wisdom over our own perceived independence, especially when it comes to caring for those around us and living out the true meaning of Matthew 25:32 and the divine separation.
