... Read moreI’ve noticed that my taste in Kpop songs has evolved quite a bit over time. Songs I initially skipped or didn’t connect with eventually became some of my favorites. I think this happens because sometimes a song needs a second chance—you might not be in the right mood or context when you first hear it. For example, 'How You Like That' by BLACKPINK didn’t catch my attention at first, especially the chorus and instrumental, but revisiting it later made me appreciate its catchy beats and powerful energy.
Similarly, BTS’s 'Dynamite' seemed a bit cheesy at first, but after hearing it repeatedly—especially while working—I found myself singing along and genuinely enjoying the feel-good vibe it gives. The same thing happened with Twice’s 'Summer Night'; it wasn’t love at first listen, and even at concerts I wasn’t that into it, but hearing it during daily commutes changed my perspective. I also regret not fully enjoying Twice’s live performances of that track!
Monsta X’s 'DRAMARAMA' surprised me the most. I openly admitted not liking it initially, but spending more time with the full album helped me understand and like their style more. Meanwhile, Mamamoo’s 'HIP' is another song I underestimated at debut but now jam to. Watching their choreography videos helped me appreciate their artistry even more.
From my experience, it’s worth giving songs you’re unsure about multiple listens, sometimes in different settings. This way, you can discover layers you missed before, whether it’s the melody, lyrics, or performance aspects. Kpop, with its diverse genres and concepts, especially benefits from this approach. What I thought was cheesy or unappealing initially might actually be a catchy, empowering anthem with the right mindset. So, if you find yourself dismissing a song too quickly, try revisiting it later—chances are, it might grow on you as it did for me.
