My first crochet project!

2025/2/23 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so like I mentioned, making this little bow was my absolute first crochet project, and I'm still buzzing from the success! When I decided to dive into crochet, I honestly felt a bit overwhelmed. There are so many hooks, different types of yarn, and patterns that look like hieroglyphics! But I told myself, 'Just pick one simple thing and start.' My biggest tip for anyone thinking about their own first crochet project? Don't go for something huge or super intricate. Small projects are your best friend! Things like washcloths, coasters, simple scarves, or even little appliques like my bow are perfect. They give you a chance to practice basic stitches without getting frustrated by a massive commitment. I specifically looked for patterns that only used one or two basic stitches – for my bow, it was mostly single crochet, which is super beginner-friendly. Another thing I learned really quickly is about supplies. You don't need to buy out the entire craft store! For your first crochet project, honestly, just grab a medium-sized hook (like a 4mm or 5mm, which works well with most common worsted weight yarns), a ball of inexpensive acrylic yarn in a light color (it's easier to see your stitches!), and a pair of scissors. That's really all you need to get started. I'm still waiting for my tapestry needle to arrive for weaving in ends, but you can totally get the main part of your project done without it. Don't let waiting for every single tool stop you from beginning! When I picked out my yarn, I went for a medium weight, sort of worsted weight yarn, in a bright pink. I heard that starting with a lighter color yarn makes it easier to see your stitches, and I can confirm that's great advice! Darker colors can make it really tricky to distinguish where your hook should go, especially when you're just getting the hang of it. Also, acrylic yarn is usually quite affordable, making it perfect for practice pieces where you might make a few mistakes. No need to splurge on fancy wool for your very first crochet project! When it came to finding a pattern, YouTube was my savior. There are tons of 'learn to crochet for beginners' videos for free! I found a video for this bow that walked me through every single step. Visuals are so much easier when you're just starting out than trying to decipher written patterns. Look for videos that are slow-paced and show the stitches clearly. And a quick word about frustrations: they will happen. My tension was all over the place at first, and I definitely had to unravel my work a few times. Don't give up! Every messed-up stitch is a learning opportunity. The feeling of seeing your yarn turn into something real, even a small bow, is incredibly rewarding. It makes all those initial fumbles worth it. So, if you're on the fence about tackling your first crochet project, just go for it! You might surprise yourself with what you can create. Happy hooking!
