My recent trip to Sarajevo truly reaffirmed its place as one of my happy places! This incredible city in Bosnia & Herzegovina is an absolute treasure, brimming with history, delicious food, and vibrant culture. If you're planning a European adventure, I wholeheartedly recommend adding Sarajevo to your itinerary. One of my absolute favorite things to do is simply wander through the Baščaršija, Sarajevo's old bazaar. The iconic Sebilj fountain stands proudly in the square, a perfect spot to watch the world go by. You’ll find yourself on charming cobblestone streets, surrounded by historic buildings and the buzz of local life. It's truly where the heart of the city beats, and I loved seeing the vibrant energy, much like the lively outdoor market scenes I captured. The blend of cultures is evident everywhere, from grand churches with prominent rose windows to elegant mosque domes dotting the skyline. Speaking of history, if you're looking for unique things to see in Sarajevo, you absolutely must visit Inat Kuća, also known as the House of Spite. This incredible 17th-century residence has such a fascinating story of defiance and resilience. It was literally moved brick by brick to make way for a new city hall, standing as a testament to the local spirit. It’s not just a beautiful building; it’s a piece of living history that tells a profound story of the city. And let's talk about the food! Sarajevo is a culinary delight. You cannot leave without trying authentic Bosnian ćevapi. Imagine succulent grilled minced meat, perfectly seasoned, served with fresh flatbread, chopped onions, and a dollop of creamy kajmak. I remember enjoying mine with a refreshing Olimpija water – pure bliss! While there are many great spots, keep an eye out for local bakeries like Pekara Edin Sarajevo, often praised for their fresh bread and pastries, which complement the ćevapi experience perfectly. Don't forget to indulge in the ritual of Bosnian coffee, served beautifully in traditional sets with sugar cubes and sweets, it’s an experience in itself. And for a sweet treat, a scoop of ice cream on a warm day is always a good idea! For breathtaking Sarajevo views, a trip up Trebević mountain is a must. The cable car ride offers spectacular panoramic vistas of the entire city, letting you appreciate Sarajevo's unique landscape nestled among the hills. It's an unforgettable experience, especially at sunset, offering a perspective on Sarajevo's beauty that you can't get anywhere else. Beyond specific landmarks, I was struck by the everyday charm. Walking through the streets, I saw elegant local women going about their day, and the general friendliness of the people was heartwarming. Even a friendly tortoiseshell cat peering through a grate added to the city's character! Every corner holds a small discovery, like catching fresh water from an old stone fountain. It’s these small, authentic moments that make Sarajevo so special. In short, Sarajevo offers an incredible blend of history, culture, delicious food, and stunning scenery.
