Does it happen at a particular time of day when he's typically tired? Looking for these clues can help you understand if it's specific avoidance or a general fatigue issue. What can you do about it? I've found a few things that help. Instead of bringing up heavy topics right as you're winding down for bed, try to choose a different time and setting. Maybe a weekend morning over coffee, or during a walk when you're both relaxed and not facing the immediate pressure of sleep. Frame the conversation differently, too. Instead of presenting a problem that needs fixing immediately, try opening with, "I've been feeling worried about [child's issue], and I'd love to just talk through it with you when you have the mental space." This indicates you're looking for connection and shared processing, not necessarily an immediate solution. It's also okay to express how his falling asleep makes you feel, but do it calmly and when you're both awake. Something like, "Honey, when you fall asleep while I'm talking about our child, it makes me feel really alone and unheard. I know you might be tired, but it’s important to me that we can discuss these things." This opens a dialogue about the behavior and its impact, rather than accusing him of not caring. Sometimes, my husband will even suggest, "Let's talk about this tomorrow morning after some coffee, I'm just too wiped right now." While not ideal for immediate processing, it's a step towards better communication. Ultimately, understanding this behavior requires empathy for both yourself and your partner. It's tough when you're trying to connect and feel shut down.
