Balancing a demanding career with family responsibilities can be challenging, especially when working long shifts on weekends. As someone who also juggles a 12-hour shift on a Saturday, I've found that thorough preparation is essential to ensure the day runs smoothly both at work and at home. One of the biggest keys is planning ahead the day before. This means preparing meals in advance so that your family has easy-to-heat options ready and you don’t spend extra time worrying about dinner. It also helps to organize outfits and work essentials the night before, reducing any morning scramble. Another important part is arranging support. Whether it’s your partner, a babysitter, or a trusted friend, having someone to watch your children or assist with household tasks while you’re working a long shift makes a substantial difference. It’s encouraging to know that my husband is home with the kids while I’m at work, which creates peace of mind and allows me to focus better during my shift. Self-care is often overlooked but critical. Ensuring you get enough rest before your shift and taking moments during work breaks to relax will maintain your energy levels. Also, wearing comfortable clothing and packing snacks and water can improve your stamina throughout the day. Lastly, communicating openly with your family about your schedule and needs lets everyone understand and support each other better. It helps reduce stress and brings your household together as a team when managing weekend work demands. By sharing my experience, I hope to encourage fellow moms in healthcare and other demanding roles to take proactive steps to manage those long weekend shifts without sacrificing family time or well-being.
