Thrifting the Perfect Tags for Your Project When I started this project, I literally just kept my eyes peeled for interesting clothing tags whenever I was thrifting. It’s amazing what you can find! Don't be afraid to dig through bins at your local thrift store, visit flea markets, or even ask friends if they have old clothes they're getting rid of. I found some amazing ones like vintage Lee and American Eagle tags, which instantly added a cool retro vibe to my collection. The Harley-Davidson tags I spotted were a real score – they have such iconic branding and really stood out! Look for tags with different textures, colors, and fonts. Sometimes, even the care tags can have a unique appeal if you trim them cleverly. Remember, variety is key to making your patchwork design pop. I even kept some 'Collectible Heirloom' type tags because they just sounded cool and added to the story of the shirt, making it feel even more special. The more diverse your tag collection, the richer your final design will be. Don't forget to give them a gentle clean if needed before you start sewing! Designing Your Layout & Adding Flair with Embroidery Once you've got a good collection of tags – maybe a mix of everyday brands and those unique finds like the 'Pointe' tag – the real fun begins: arranging them! I spent a good amount of time just laying them out on my t-shirt, moving them around until I found a composition I loved. Think about balance and how different sizes, like that small 'Pointe' tag next to a larger brand tag, can create visual interest. Don't be afraid to overlap a little or let them hang at different angles. For my 'matchbox' effect, I actually embroidered little matchstick designs onto some of the tags, and adding tiny beads gave them that extra pop and dimension – it really makes them look like little 3D matchboxes! Choosing Your Base Tee & Making It Last For my project, I went with a light gray cropped t-shirt, which I felt was the perfect canvas to make the colorful tags stand out. Consider the fabric of your base shirt – a sturdy cotton works well for sewing on tags and will hold up to the added weight and stitching. Make sure it's clean and pre-shrunk before you start. When you're sewing the tags on, use a strong thread and make sure your stitches are secure, especially if you plan on wearing and washing it often. To keep your amazing creation looking its best, I'd recommend hand-washing it or washing it on a delicate cycle in cold water, inside out, and then air drying.
