does reading on an ereader count as screen time? 📚

I’ve been trying to reduce my screen time lately, but I’m torn, does reading on an e-reader count? I know it’s technically a screen, but it’s for a hobby I love and helps me relax. What do you think, does it count? Explain why! I’d love to hear your thoughts and how you decide which screens are helpful versus draining. AYA!

... Read moreIt's a question many of us grapple with as we try to be more mindful of our digital habits: does reading on an e-reader like a Kindle or Kobo truly count as screen time? I've been deep in this debate myself, especially when I'm trying to reduce my overall screen exposure. On one hand, yes, it's a device with a screen. On the other, it's dedicated solely to reading, a hobby I cherish that helps me relax and unwind. The core of this debate often comes down to the type of screen. Unlike the backlit LCD or LED screens of our smartphones, tablets, and computers, most dedicated e-readers (like the Kindle Paperwhite or many Kobo models) use E-ink technology. This is a game-changer. E-ink displays reflect ambient light, much like a physical book page, rather than emitting light directly into your eyes. This significantly reduces glare and eye strain, making the reading experience far more comfortable, especially for long periods. You don't get the same blue light exposure that can disrupt sleep patterns, which is a common concern with traditional screens. So, while technically an e-reader is a 'screen,' its impact on our eyes and brain is remarkably different from scrolling through social media or working on a laptop. When I'm engrossed in a book like 'The Proving Ground' by Michael Connelly on my e-reader, nestled on a fluffy white blanket, it feels like a completely different activity than consuming content on my phone. It's a focused, calm experience, not one that leaves me feeling mentally drained or overstimulated. Many experts suggest that 'screen time' should be differentiated by its purpose and effect. Is the screen use active and engaging (like reading a book or learning a new skill), or passive and potentially addictive (like endless scrolling or binge-watching)? For me, e-reader reading falls squarely into the beneficial category. It's a tool that enhances my love for books, providing convenience without the typical drawbacks associated with excessive digital consumption. If you're still concerned about eye strain or want to optimize your e-reader experience, here are a few tips: Adjust Lighting: If your e-reader has a front light, keep it at a comfortable, low setting, especially in dim environments. Many have warm light options for evening reading. Take Breaks: Even with e-ink, it's good practice to follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Choose the Right Device: If reducing eye strain is your top priority, prioritize e-readers with E-ink technology over tablets that can also function as e-readers but have traditional backlit screens. Mindful Use: The key is mindfulness. If reading on your Kindle or Kobo helps you relax and disconnect from other, more demanding screens, then it's likely a positive use of your time, regardless of the 'screen' label. Ultimately, how you categorize e-reader time is a personal choice. For me, it's a helpful tool for a beloved hobby, and I don't group it with the 'screen time' I'm actively trying to reduce. What are your thoughts on this? I'd love to hear how you manage your digital reading!

Me personally I don’t think it counts. You are not getting as distracted by notifications, messages and etc like on your phone. I have a kindle too and it helps me relax so much.
