HOW TO SPOT A TOXIC FRIEND!!! 🚩🚩🚩🚩

2025/7/30 Edited to

... Read moreIt's a tough pill to swallow, but sometimes, the people closest to us can be the ones causing us the most pain. I remember a time when I felt constantly drained after hanging out with a particular friend. I kept asking myself, 'is my friend toxic?' or 'how to know if your friend is toxic?'. It took me a while to learn how to spot a toxic friend, but once I recognized the signs, it was a game-changer for my mental well-being. One of the first red flags I noticed was the constant negativity. Every conversation would revolve around their problems, and my successes were often met with passive-aggressive remarks or downplayed. This is a classic sign of a toxic friendship: they rarely celebrate you. Another clear indication was the lack of support. When I needed a listening ear or a cheerleader, they were nowhere to be found, or worse, they'd make it about themselves. Truly, a toxic best friend can be the hardest one to identify because you share so much history. I also learned to look out for signs of disrespect in friendships. This could manifest as them constantly canceling plans last minute without apology, badmouthing you to others, or making jokes at your expense that genuinely hurt. It's a subtle form of manipulation, making you question your own feelings. If you're constantly feeling defensive or misunderstood, that's a huge warning sign. I used to brush it off, thinking 'oh, that's just how they are,' but over time, these traits of a toxic friend chip away at your self-esteem. There are various types of toxic friendships. Some might be the 'competitive friend' who always tries to one-up you. Others are the 'drainers' who leave you exhausted after every interaction. Then there's the heartbreaking experience of betrayal from a friend, which can shatter trust completely. Recognizing these patterns is crucial. For me, the moment I truly understood how to know if you have toxic friends was when I started feeling more anxious before seeing them than excited. That feeling spoke volumes. So, what do you do once you’ve identified these toxic friendship signs? It's not easy, but setting boundaries is essential. You don’t have to cut them off immediately, but you can control the frequency and depth of your interactions. I started saying 'no' more often to plans that felt draining and prioritizing my own energy. Sometimes, a direct conversation can help, but be prepared that a truly toxic person might not be receptive. In some cases, for your own peace, it might be necessary to slowly distance yourself. It hurts, yes, but protecting your mental health is paramount. You deserve friendships that uplift, support, and respect you. Remember, it's okay to outgrow certain relationships, and sometimes, letting go is the kindest thing you can do for yourself and your future.
