Very sweet and very demanding 🦌

These deer are unlike any others because they have grown very accustomed to humans over time, which makes them both friendly and surprisingly assertive. Many visitors find them very sweet as they approach gently, but also very demanding since they're used to being fed by tourists. From personal experience, approaching the deer with a small packet of special deer crackers (shika senbei) is a must. These crackers are widely sold near the park entrance and are the key to the deers’ fondness for visitors. However, it’s important to be prepared: once the deer recognize that you have food, they often follow you around, and some can be quite persistent! One thing I learned is to always stay calm and composed. Quick movements or loud noises might startle them, but feeding them calmly creates a magical connection. It’s also rewarding to see how the deer interact with each other while you’re there; you can spot fathers with their fawns and playful groups. Beyond feeding, just walking around and taking photos with the serene backdrop of temples and the forest within Nara Park adds to the charm. Remember that the deer are wild animals, so treating them with respect and following park guidelines ensures both your safety and the animals’ well-being. If you’re planning a trip, visiting during the quieter hours or weekdays can give you a more relaxed experience. Also, don’t miss out on exploring the historical sites nearby, making the deer encounter part of a rich cultural journey in Nara.
