What is Love?

defining love

I think one of the most important conversations we can have is asking someone what love means to them.

Because love isn’t defined the same way by everyone.

For some, it’s physical affection.

For others, it’s emotional connection.

Some people feel loved through words.

Others feel loved through consistency, effort, and actions.

And I think a lot of relationships struggle when two people are speaking different versions of love without realizing it.

Love isn’t just what we say.

It’s how we show up.

How we listen.

How we support.

How we make someone feel when life isn’t easy.

Maybe understanding love starts with understanding what it looks like to the person standing in front of you.

... Read moreIn my experience, love is truly a complex and deeply personal emotion that varies significantly from one person to another. I've found that building a healthy relationship requires more than just saying "I love you"; it demands awareness of how love is expressed and received by each partner. For instance, some people feel most loved when they receive physical affection, such as hugs and touch, while others might prioritize consistent effort and reliability as their expression of love. One key insight I've learned is that love languages—such as words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, physical touch, and receiving gifts—play a crucial role in bridging emotional gaps. When couples understand each other's love language, they are better equipped to support and connect emotionally, reducing misunderstandings and unfulfilled needs. Moreover, love is not static. It evolves through active listening, empathy, and showing up, especially during challenging times. Supporting someone emotionally when life gets tough is often what transforms mere affection into genuine, lasting love. This includes being vulnerable and embracing the imperfections in ourselves and others. Personally, I've found that asking someone, "What does love look like to you?" opens a powerful dialogue that fosters deeper understanding and intimacy. It encourages us to move beyond assumptions about love and appreciate the unique ways it is felt and demonstrated. Ultimately, love’s true meaning might be less about fitting into a universal definition and more about sharing a sincere commitment to honoring and responding to the other person's emotional needs in a way that feels authentic and heartfelt. This journey of discovering and embracing different expressions of love can enrich any relationship and promote mental health awareness by reducing feelings of loneliness and emotional disconnect.
