... Read moreHey everyone! I'm so excited about my new book blanket project, and I wanted to chat a bit more about what inspired it and how you can start your own! If you're like me, you love both reading and crocheting, so combining them into a 'book blanket' is just perfect.
What Exactly is a Book Blanket?
Essentially, it's a crochet blanket where each square represents a book you've read. Some people do one square per book, others might dedicate a whole panel to a series. It's a wonderful way to visually track your reading journey and create a super cozy, personalized keepsake. Mine is going to be my 2025 book blanket, so every book I finish next year will get its own square!
Why Start a Book Blanket?
For me, it's about celebrating my love for stories. Every time I snuggle under it, I'll remember all the amazing worlds I've visited and characters I've met. It's also a fantastic motivator to read more, and a beautiful, tangible representation of a year's worth of literary adventures. Plus, it's a great way to use up yarn scraps and try out new granny square patterns!
Getting Started: Planning Your Own Crochet Book Blanket
Choose Your Timeline: Are you doing a 'year in books' blanket like mine for 2025, or just an ongoing project?
Decide on Square Size & Pattern: I'm using a classic granny square, which is super versatile. You can choose any pattern you like! Think about how many books you typically read in your chosen timeframe to estimate your blanket's final size.
Yarn & Color Inspiration: This is the fun part! For my first square, inspired by 'Good Girl, Bad Blood,' I picked a red border with black, white, and grey for the center, reflecting the book's cover art and mood. You can match your square's colors to the book cover, the book's genre, or even the feeling it evoked. Some people use a consistent color palette throughout their blanket, while others go wild with variety. Don't be afraid to experiment!
Tracking Your Reads: I keep a simple list of books I've read and note down the colors I plan to use for each square. It helps keep everything organized.
My First Square Example: 'Good Girl, Bad Blood'
After finishing 'Good Girl, Bad Blood' by Holly Jackson, I immediately knew I wanted to capture its essence in yarn. The striking red on the cover, along with the darker, mysterious tones of the story, led to my choice of red for the border and a mix of black, white, and grey for the inner rounds. Seeing the finished granny square next to the book cover, with those white earbuds featured, makes me so happy. It's a perfect little memory of a fantastic read. I can't wait to add more squares throughout 2025.
I'm really looking forward to seeing this blanket grow throughout 2025. What books are you planning to read, and would you ever start a book blanket? Let me know in the comments!
