In 8 BCE, the Roman Senate renamed the month "Augustus" in honor of Augustus Caesar, who was the first emperor of Rome. The month was chosen because it was a significant time for Augustus, with several of his military victories and important events occurring during this month.

Over time, the name "Augustus" was adapted to "August" in English, and it has been retained as the eighth month of the Gregorian calendar used internationally today.
