Ruby Throated Hummingbird ❤️

I absolutely adore watching ruby-throated hummingbirds zip around my garden! Their tiny size and incredible speed always bring a smile to my face. I started feeding them a few years ago, and it's become one of my favorite backyard activities. If you're looking to attract these beautiful little gems, I've learned a few tried-and-true methods that I'd love to share with you. First off, choosing the right feeder is crucial. I've experimented with a few types, but I personally prefer the saucer-style feeders. They're usually easier to clean, which is super important, and they tend to leak less than some of the inverted bottle designs. Look for feeders with red accents, as hummingbirds are naturally drawn to the color red, but remember, the nectar itself should never be dyed red. Stick to clear nectar for their safety! Speaking of nectar, making your own is surprisingly simple and much better for the birds than store-bought options with unnecessary preservatives. My go-to recipe is a simple 1:4 sugar-to-water ratio. I use one part plain white granulated sugar to four parts water. I bring the water to a boil, dissolve the sugar completely, and then let it cool completely before filling my feeders. Boiling helps sterilize the solution and makes it last a bit longer. I always make sure it's completely cool before putting it out; nobody wants hot nectar! Feeder placement is another key factor. I've found that placing my feeders in a partly shaded area, especially during the hottest parts of the day, helps keep the nectar fresh longer and prevents it from fermenting too quickly. I also try to hang them near some of my flowering plants that hummingbirds already love, like bee balm or petunias, but far enough from dense foliage where predators might hide. And if you have outdoor cats, please be mindful of where you place your feeders to keep the hummers safe. Cleaning is probably the most important, yet often overlooked, part of successful hummingbird feeding. Nectar can quickly grow mold and bacteria, especially in warm weather, which can be harmful to the birds. I commit to cleaning my feeders every 2-3 days, sometimes daily if it's really hot. I use a bottle brush and hot water, and occasionally a weak vinegar solution for a thorough scrub. Rinse them really well to remove any vinegar residue before refilling! Sometimes you'll encounter little issues like ants or bees. For ants, an 'ant moat' filled with water above the feeder works wonders – they can't cross the water! Bees can be a bit trickier, but feeders with bee guards or ones that only allow a hummingbird's long tongue to reach the nectar can help. If you're still struggling, try moving the feeder a few feet away; sometimes that's all it takes. Beyond feeders, I also try to make my yard a general hummingbird haven. Planting native flowers that provide natural nectar sources is fantastic. They also appreciate a shallow water source, like a bird bath with a mister, to preen and cool off. It’s amazing to see them flitting through the water droplets! Finally, remember that ruby-throated hummingbirds are migratory. They usually arrive in spring and head south in late summer or early fall. I keep my feeders up well into the fall, sometimes even into early winter, as late stragglers or migrating birds can still benefit from a quick energy boost. It's such a joy to support them on their incredible journey. Attracting and feeding ruby-throated hummingbirds has truly enriched my outdoor space.
