Be weather aware!!!

I've personally experienced the anxiety of sudden storms, and it really brought home the fact that preparedness isn't just for extreme situations—it's for everyday life. Being weather aware means more than just knowing if it's going to rain; it's about understanding the potential risks and having a plan to #besafe. First off, staying informed is your best defense. I always recommend having multiple ways to get weather updates. My go-to is usually a reliable weather app on my phone, but I also make sure to tune into local news or a weather radio during severe weather events. Knowing the difference between a 'watch' and a 'warning' is critical. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form, so it's time to be extra vigilant and have your plan ready. A tornado warning, however, means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar, and you need to seek shelter immediately. Seriously, don't wait! Next, have an emergency kit ready. This has saved me so much stress. Think about what you'd need if you lost power for a few days. My kit includes bottled water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, a flashlight with extra batteries (or a hand-crank one!), a fully charged power bank for my phone, and any necessary medications. It's also smart to have a whistle to signal for help and copies of important documents in a waterproof bag. I keep mine in an easily accessible spot, so I can grab it quickly if I need to. Know your safe spot. If a #tornado warning is issued, do you know where to go? For me, it's the innermost room on the lowest level of my home, away from windows. If you have a basement or storm cellar, that's even better. Practice getting there with your family, so everyone knows what to do without panic. It might sound silly, but a quick drill can make all the difference when seconds count. Finally, have a communication plan. In the chaos of #badweather, sometimes cell service can go down or you might get separated from loved ones. Decide on a meeting place outside your home and even an out-of-state contact person who everyone can check in with. This way, if local lines are jammed, you have another way to connect and ensure everyone is okay. These steps might seem small, but they really add up to a huge peace of mind. Let's all commit to being more weather aware and looking out for each other!
