It is with grief that we know we’re capable of loving. It is also the last act of love we bestow upon someone we’ve lost whether it be death or estrangement. It will be 13 years since my mom passed away and 4 years since my dad did come February. In the Hmong culture, my siblings and I have become “me nyuam ntsuag” (orphans). I am so grateful to have the chance to be my mother and father’s son in this lifetime. 🕊️🤍#grief #healing #khaopiaksen #foodie #hmong

... Read moreIt’s a profound and sometimes unbearable feeling, isn't it? That deep capacity for love, and then confronting the immense void when those you cherish most are gone. I still remember the day my mom passed away back in 2012. The grief was so raw, so overwhelming, that I cried out, 'Who will be my mom now?' My dad, with a quiet strength that only a parent can possess, held me close and said, 'Don't cry. Half of me will be your mom. The other half will be your dad.' Those words, a promise of enduring love and presence, became a powerful source of comfort for me. But then, four years ago, the unthinkable happened again. He, too, was gone. And just like that, I understood the full weight of becoming an orphan, a ‘me nyuam ntsuag’ in our Hmong culture. The finality of it all settled deep within my bones, a stark reminder of the profound losses I had endured. Grief isn't a linear path; it's a winding journey with endless twists, turns, and unexpected moments of sorrow and remembrance. For years, I found myself searching for quotes of comfort, desperate for words that could articulate the ache in my heart or offer a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. What I've learned is that true comfort often comes from within, from cherishing the memories, allowing yourself to feel every emotion, and finding ways to keep their spirit alive. I found solace in remembering. My dad’s words weren’t just a comforting phrase; they became a living truth. I began to see my mom in my dad's actions and wisdom, and now, I see both of them reflected in myself and my siblings. It’s as if their love didn’t disappear; it transformed, becoming an integral part of who I am. This realization was a monumental step in my ongoing healing process. It’s not about 'moving on' from them, but rather moving forward with their love woven into the very fabric of my being. Many cultures have their own beautiful ways of honoring the departed. For us in the Hmong community, remembrance is a profound and sacred act. Even if you don't have specific cultural practices, creating your own personal rituals can be incredibly comforting. It could be as simple as lighting a candle in their memory, poring over old photo albums, or cooking a favorite meal they loved. These small, intentional acts keep their spirit vibrant in your heart and allow you to feel a continued connection to them. Finding comfort isn't always about grand gestures or profound revelations. Sometimes, it's the quiet moments that offer the most peace. Journaling my feelings, even the messy and contradictory ones, helped me process the complexity of my grief. Talking to friends and family who knew my parents, sharing stories, laughing at old memories, and shedding tears together—that communal grief can be incredibly healing. It serves as a powerful reminder that you are not alone in your sorrow, and that their legacy lives on in many hearts beyond your own. And for anyone grappling with the loss of a spouse, a child, or any beloved figure, remember that their presence, though no longer physical, can still guide you. My parents instilled in me resilience, boundless love, and the paramount importance of family. These lessons are their enduring gifts, their legacy that continues to shape my life. Even when I cried and wondered, 'who will be my mom now?', the answer was always there, within me: their love, now a part of my own, continues to nurture and guide me. It's a bittersweet truth, but love truly never dies; it simply changes form. May you too find your own unique path to comfort and continue to feel the love that remains.
