So I just started this book like a few days ago and it’s so good. It’s about an FBI agent named Kelsey Hawk who doesn’t follow protocols but gets the job done and her boss doesn’t like that, so she’s sent to the middle of nowhere in North Dakota near her old hometown she hates to be SAG and when she gets there there’s a killer dropping dead women with no families in blocks of ice all over. There are 5 books in the series. I love murder mysteries and thriller novels as well as romance so this is right up my alley.

It's not just a standalone thrill ride; it's the start of the gripping Kelsey Hawk Mystery series, and I'm already planning my next reads! If you're like me and were instantly drawn to FBI agent Kelsey Hawk's no-nonsense approach and the chilling North Dakota setting, you'll be thrilled to know there's so much more to explore within this compelling collection.
The first book, 'Dead Inside,' perfectly sets the stage with Kelsey being sent to a quiet, isolated town, only to discover a series of gruesome murders involving bodies found in blocks of ice. This premise alone makes for a truly unique and horrifying mystery. What really hooked me was the seamless blend of intense crime investigation with those subtle, simmering hints of romance – it adds such a fascinating, human layer to the narrative. And let's not forget Kelsey herself, a protagonist who isn't afraid to bend the rules to get justice, making her incredibly relatable and exciting to follow.
One of the standout features of this series, even just from the first book, is the palpable atmosphere. The descriptions of North Dakota, especially when combined with the visual cues from the book covers like 'Dead Reckoning,' 'Dead To Me,' 'Dead Silence,' and 'Dead By Dawn,' truly immerse you. Each cover consistently features stark, snowy landscapes, often with isolated cabins or houses under dark, dramatic skies. This visual theme perfectly reflects the remote, chilling environment where Kelsey operates, enhancing the feeling of isolation and danger that makes these thrillers so effective and atmospheric.
For anyone who loves a good murder mystery with a strong, complex female lead, or psychological thrillers that genuinely keep you guessing until the very last page, this series is an absolute gem. Kate Bold has a masterful knack for crafting intricate, multi-layered plots that are full of unexpected twists and turns. You're constantly trying to piece together the clues alongside Kelsey, which makes for such an immersive and engaging reading experience. It’s not just about solving the crime; it's about understanding the characters and the dark motivations behind the heinous acts.
What I deeply appreciate about Kate Bold's writing is how she manages to create such a palpable sense of tension and urgency. Her characters feel real, their struggles are authentic, and the stakes are incredibly high. It’s the kind of series where you finish one book and immediately feel compelled to pick up the next, just to see what new challenges and mysteries Kelsey will face and how she'll navigate the often-perilous personal and professional landscapes thrown her way. The continuity and character development across the series promise a truly satisfying long-term reading commitment.
