Just as a lake’s surface can mirror the sky and landscape only when undisturbed, our mind must be calm to perceive our true inner self. Achieving this state of mental stillness isn’t about emptying the mind forcefully but allowing thoughts to settle naturally through practices such as focused breathing and gentle yoga postures. One of the techniques I often use, inspired by Iyengar’s teachings, involves starting my morning with a few moments of quiet reflection and seated meditation. This sets a tone for the day that encourages mindful awareness. Over time, I noticed how moments of agitation or stress slowly give way to clearer and more balanced thinking, much like the lake’s water calms after a storm. This concept extends beyond personal practice. When we hold stillness within, we become better observers of our own emotions, reactions, and behaviors. It opens a pathway to understanding and embracing the essence of who we are—the Self—distinct from the fluctuations of everyday life. Such insights have practical benefits too: improved emotional regulation, enhanced concentration, and an overall sense of peace. Incorporating Iyengar’s wisdom has also taught me the importance of patience and gentleness with myself. Just as nature takes its time to restore tranquility after disturbance, we too must allow ourselves space and time to reflect deeply without judgment. This reflective practice, enriched by the imagery of calm waters, continues to guide me toward greater self-awareness and inner clarity.
