Wash your produce

... Read moreOkay, so you saw my post about finding a spider on my grapes while I was washing them – seriously, a total shocker! It was just chilling there in the water in my stainless steel sink, right next to all those beautiful red and purple grapes. That moment was such a stark reminder of why we absolutely need to wash our fruits and veggies thoroughly, especially delicate ones like grapes. Before that, I thought I was pretty diligent, but that little eight-legged surprise really hammered it home! You might be wondering, "Do I really need to wash grapes?" And the answer is a resounding YES! Grapes, like many other produce items, travel a long way from farm to plate. They're exposed to all sorts of things: pesticides, dirt, dust, and yes, sometimes even little critters like spiders or other insects. Plus, countless hands might have touched them before they reach your kitchen. A quick rinse under the tap just isn't enough to get rid of all that. So, what's my go-to method for washing grapes effectively, especially after my spider encounter? It’s super simple and really works! My Tried-and-True Grape Washing Method (in a Bowl!): Gather Your Tools: You'll need a large, clean bowl (I use a big mixing bowl), a colander, and fresh, cool water. Some people like to add a splash of white vinegar or a teaspoon of baking soda to their wash water, and I occasionally do for an extra clean feel, especially with berries. Separate Gently: If your grapes are still on the vine in big bunches, gently snip them into smaller, manageable clusters. This allows the wash water to reach every berry. Avoid tearing them off, as this can damage the skin. The Soak is Key: Place your grape clusters into the large bowl. Fill the bowl with cool water, making sure all the grapes are fully submerged. If you're using vinegar (about 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) or baking soda (1 teaspoon per bowl of water), add it now. Let Them Sit: This is where the magic happens! Let the grapes soak for about 10-15 minutes. You’ll often see dirt, debris, or even tiny insects float to the surface. It’s truly eye-opening! That's when I found my spider friend, just chilling out while my grapes were soaking in water. It makes you realize how important this step is for all your veggies and fruits. Gentle Agitation: After soaking, gently swish the grapes around in the water with your hands. This helps dislodge any remaining particles. Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the dirty water from the bowl. Transfer the grapes to a colander and rinse them thoroughly under cool, running water. Make sure to rinse until any trace of vinegar or baking soda smell is gone, and the water runs clear. Dry Properly: This step is crucial to prevent mold and keep your grapes fresh longer. You can spread them out on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to air dry. For a quicker dry, gently pat them with another clean towel. Make sure they are completely dry before storing. Ever since my little spider incident, I've been extra diligent with this routine. It gives me so much peace of mind knowing that when I grab a handful of those delicious red and purple grapes, they're not just tasty, but genuinely clean. So next time you bring home some fresh produce, remember to give them a good wash – especially those grapes in a bowl!
