When I first started out with horses, I honestly thought 'clothes for horses' just meant a saddle! But oh boy, was I wrong. Just like we have different outfits for different weather and activities, our equine friends need their own wardrobe too. It's not just about looking cute (though they certainly do!), but mostly about comfort, protection, and health. Let me share some of my personal must-haves when it comes to horse clothing. First up, blankets and sheets. These are probably the most common 'clothes' you'll see on a horse. I use turnout blankets for my horse, Comet, when he's out in the pasture during colder months or rainy days. They keep him warm and dry, preventing him from getting chilled. There are also stable blankets for when they're stalled, and lighter fly sheets for summer to protect against pesky insects and even UV rays. Sizing is super important here – a blanket that's too tight can rub, and one that's too loose can get caught or shift. I always measure Comet from the center of his chest to the point of his buttock to get the perfect fit. Next, we have boots and wraps. These are lifesavers, especially for active horses. I always put splint boots on Comet's front legs when we're riding or he's turned out, to protect against knocks and bumps. Bell boots are fantastic for horses that tend to overreach and step on their front heels, preventing injuries. And for extra support during strenuous exercise, I sometimes use polo wraps, though you need to be careful to wrap them correctly to avoid tendon damage. Don't forget the everyday essentials like halters and lead ropes. While not strictly 'clothing,' they’re certainly part of their daily wear! I prefer a sturdy nylon halter for everyday use and a leather one for special occasions or when I want a bit more give. Finally, saddle pads and fly masks. A good saddle pad is crucial for Comet's comfort under the saddle. It cushions, absorbs sweat, and helps the saddle fit better. I've noticed a huge difference in his back comfort since finding the right kind. And in summer, a fly mask is non-negotiable! It protects his sensitive eyes from flies and harmful sun rays, making him much happier out in the field. It might seem like a lot at first, but each piece of horse clothing serves a vital purpose. Investing in the right gear not only keeps your horse happy and healthy but also strengthens that special bond you share. It's all about making sure they're as comfortable and protected as possible!
