- Add your beans & seasonings
- Add 2 cups of water
- Let it simmer for about 15-20 mins

Refried beans are a staple in many Latin American cuisines, and making them at home allows you to adjust flavors and textures to your liking. Using canned pinto beans like Goya is a convenient way to save time without sacrificing taste. I personally prefer extra virgin olive oil for sautéing garlic because it adds a subtle richness and aroma that complements the beans well. When mashing the beans, I recommend leaving some whole for texture, but you can mash more thoroughly if you prefer a smoother dip. The combination of garlic, black pepper, onion powder, and chicken bouillon creates a balanced seasoning that enhances the natural flavor of the beans. If you're vegan or prefer to avoid chicken bouillon, vegetable broth powder is a great substitute. Simmering the beans with water helps them absorb the flavors and softens them perfectly. Stirring often during the final cooking stage and slowly adding the remaining water prevents the mixture from becoming too thick or burning. This method also allows you to customize the consistency, whether you want your refried beans thicker for spreading or a bit creamier for dipping. These refried beans are incredibly versatile. Besides tostadas, you can use them as a side for grilled meats, a filling for burritos, or even as a topping for nachos. Adding a squeeze of fresh lime or chopped cilantro just before serving can add brightness and freshness to the dish. Overall, this recipe is an easy and flavorful way to make homemade refried beans that beat store-bought options. With just a few everyday ingredients and a little time, you’ll have a delicious, comforting dish ready to enjoy.
