Make a Journal with Me (No Sew Spine🫶)
This “Sew Pretty” journal kit (preview is being sent to Ephemera Club this month and the digital kit is dropping 3/1/25) is meant to be made without any actual sewing 😅 Although you could, I wanted to teach a way to make a journal from just paper and glue, for those who don’t have sewing supplies 🧵
I also really like how you can remove a page to work on it flat, then replace it when finished—or add a page late (I show an example of that on my YT❤️ channel in today’s episode)—similar to a planner or ring binder 📒
The folded center binding holds the signature pages together and I love the ease and aesthetic value of the center folds 🥰
Are you into making your own journals, or do you like only writing and making art in pre-made ones? #junkjournal #journaling #crafts #creative #journalingideas
Hey creative friends! You know how much I adore making things by hand, and one of my absolute favorites is crafting personalized journals. But let's be real, not everyone has a sewing machine or the patience for intricate stitching, right? That's exactly why I fell in love with the 'no-sew' journal method, and I'm so excited to share more tips on how you can Make a Journal With Me using just paper and glue! It's such a freeing and accessible way to create a beautiful, functional journal. So, what exactly do you need to get started? Beyond your paper and glue, I'd recommend gathering a few more essentials to make your project smooth and enjoyable. Think about your pages first – you can use anything from plain printer paper, colored cardstock, old book pages, or even mixed media paper if you plan on painting or drawing. For glue, a strong, flexible craft glue like PVA (acid-free if you want it to last!) is perfect. You'll also want a good pair of scissors or a paper trimmer for precise cuts, a ruler, a bone folder (super helpful for crisp folds!), and some heavy-duty cardstock or thin cardboard for your cover. Don't forget any decorative elements like patterned paper, stickers, or even fabric scraps for a unique touch. Now, let's dive into the fun part: actually making it! Step-by-Step Guide to Your No-Sew Journal: Prepare Your Pages: Decide on your journal's size. Cut all your chosen papers to the same dimension. For a simple folded binding, stack several sheets together (this forms a 'signature'). If you want a thicker journal, you'll make multiple signatures. Create Your Folded Binding: This is the magic trick! Take each stack of pages (signature) and fold them perfectly in half. Use your bone folder to make the crease super crisp. The original article mentions a 'folded center binding,' which is fantastic for this method. You can then stack these folded signatures together. Construct Your Cover: Cut your cover material (cardstock or thin cardboard) about a quarter-inch wider and taller than your folded pages. You'll need two main pieces for the front and back, and a thinner strip for the spine. Score and fold the cover pieces to create a professional look. Glue It All Together: This is where the paper and glue really shine! Apply a line of strong craft glue along the folded edges of your signatures. Carefully press these glued edges onto the inside of your cover's spine. Work in sections if you have many pages, ensuring each signature is securely adhered. You can also glue decorative paper to the inside of your cover to hide the spine. Add a Removable Page System (Optional but Awesome!): The original article mentioned how cool it is to remove pages. For this, you could create small pockets or slits along the spine of your cover where individual pages (or smaller folded inserts) can slide in and out. This is brilliant for working on pages flat or adding new content later, just like a planner or ring binder. I've even seen people use small, removable paper clips or decorative clips for this! Personalize & Decorate: Once your journal structure is dry and sturdy, let your creativity run wild! Add decorative papers, stickers, washi tape, stamps, or even paint the cover. Make it truly yours. I love adding a little ribbon bookmark or a small charm to the spine for that extra special touch. What I personally love about this no-sew method is how forgiving it is. If you make a mistake, it's usually easy to fix. Plus, it's incredibly satisfying to hold a handmade journal that you know you created from scratch, without needing any fancy equipment. It’s perfect for beginners and seasoned crafters alike. So, go ahead, gather your materials, and let's Make a Journal With Me!
Everything is freaking cute🥰❤️
