Selling Clothes in NYC

If you’re looking to sell clothes in NYC, here’s my go-to route and what I actually made:

Crossroads Trading Brooklyn — sold 11 items for around $85. They pay you cash or store credit on the spot based on style and condition. This spot gave me the best overall payout, especially for trendy, high-quality pieces.

Then I hit Buffalo Exchange — sold 2 items for $8.50 total. They pay immediately, usually less than Crossroads but still decent for quick sales.

Last was Beacon's Closet — sold 2 items for another $8.50. Always such a long wait, but they do have a great selection if you want store credit.

Got items that don’t sell? Most spots let you donate the remainder, so your clothes don’t go to waste and you help out local charities. #lemon8partner

... Read moreThe original article gives a great snapshot of one person's experience selling clothes in NYC at three popular consignment spots. But if you're looking to declutter your closet and make some extra cash, there's more to consider before you grab your big blue bag of clothes and head out! As someone who's done this a few times, let me share some extra tips to help you maximize your earnings and make the process smoother. First, preparation is key. Don't just throw everything into a bag. Stores like Crossroads Trading and Buffalo Exchange are looking for clean, current, and in-season items. Before you even think about leaving your apartment, go through your wardrobe with a critical eye. Ask yourself: Is it clean? Is it trendy or a classic piece? Is it free of stains, tears, or excessive wear? The better condition your items are in, the higher your chances of selling them and getting a good payout. Think about what you'd buy if you were browsing racks of clothing in a store – would you pick up that item? If not, it might be better for donation. Next, understand what sells where. While the article highlights Crossroads, Buffalo Exchange, and Beacon's Closet, each store has a slightly different vibe and target demographic. Crossroads often favors more contemporary, on-trend brands, while Buffalo Exchange is a bit more eclectic, and Beacon's Closet can lean towards unique vintage finds alongside modern pieces. If you have a white graphic t-shirt with a cool design, for example, it might fly off the racks at one place but not another. Researching their current "most wanted" lists online can give you a huge advantage. Don't forget to manage your expectations regarding payouts. The article mentions getting around $85 for 11 items at Crossroads and less at others. This is pretty typical. Consignment shops need to make a profit too, so they'll offer a percentage of what they anticipate selling the item for. If you're hoping for retail prices, you might be disappointed. Focus on the convenience of getting cash on the spot (or store credit, which can be great for refreshing your own wardrobe!). What if your items don't sell? As the article briefly mentions, donation is a fantastic option. Many stores will offer to donate your unsold items directly to local charities, which is a win-win. You clear out your closet, and someone else benefits. This also saves you the hassle of hauling items back home. Finally, consider alternative selling methods if you have higher-end or designer pieces. While physical consignment stores are great for quick cash, online platforms like The RealReal, Poshmark, or Depop might yield higher returns for luxury goods, though they require more effort in terms of photography, listing, and shipping. For a truly seamless experience, however, hitting up the in-person spots like the ones mentioned remains a top choice for many New Yorkers looking to sell their clothes efficiently. Remember, every little bit helps you declutter and earn!
