Travel dupe: Italy in NYC (it’s not Nolita!)

Spending the day in Bensonhurst’s Little Italy made me feel like I was in a movie 🇮🇹✨

I kicked things off at Lioni Italian Heroes, where I grabbed a warm, crusty Italian hero sandwich stuffed with fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, and roasted peppers.

Next, I wandered over to Villabate Alba for some classic Sicilian pastries, and of course, I had to stop at Pastosa Ravioli - Bensonhurst (Flagship) for their fresh, handmade ravioli to take home. Every corner here smells like fresh bread and espresso, and the vibe is straight-up old-school Italian Brooklyn—I could wander these streets all day! #lemon8partner

... Read moreWalking through Bensonhurst's Little Italy truly transported me, making me feel like I’d stepped right into a classic movie scene. What makes this particular Italian community in Brooklyn so special, I discovered, is its deeply rooted history and the genuine way traditions are preserved. It’s not just about the food – though the food is incredible! – it’s about the lasting spirit of the Italians who built this neighborhood. Beyond just grabbing a hero or some pastries, I loved soaking in the local atmosphere. You'll often find families gathered, speaking Italian, and the storefronts tell stories of generations. The eclectic street scenes, sometimes adorned with festive decorations or even quirky statues like I saw, add to its unique charm, creating a vibrant, lived-in feel unlike anywhere else in NYC. If you're looking for that truly authentic, old-school Italian Brooklyn experience, Bensonhurst delivers. For anyone planning a visit, my biggest tip is to go hungry and be ready to explore beyond just a few spots. While Lioni Italian Heroes and Villabate Alba are must-visits, don't miss out on the other culinary delights. I heard about the incredible sausage and peppers you can find at local delis, and some spots even offer amazing broccoli rabe and traditional Italian-American steak preparations. Keep an eye out for local markets selling fresh pasta, cheeses, and imported goods – it’s a foodie’s paradise! Visiting during a street fair, as I was lucky enough to experience, truly enhances the immersion. The streets come alive with music, laughter, and the irresistible aroma of Italian-American dishes. It’s a fantastic way to witness the community's spirit firsthand and taste a broader array of regional specialties. The energy is infectious, making you feel like you're part of a big, joyful family gathering. It’s a wonderful way to connect with the living history and culture of the Bensonhurst Italian community. Overall, if you’re curious about the strong Italian presence in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and want to experience a truly authentic slice of Italy without leaving NYC, this neighborhood is an absolute gem. It’s more than just a place; it’s an experience that captures the heart and soul of Italian culture in America.
